Hi Jodi ~ Thanks for your interest in our James Martin Furniture products. The very deep countertop for the Mercer Island vanity has an integrated sink and is made from a material that the furniture industry calls "solid surface." Here's a good description of what solid surface means: "Solid surface is a man-made material usually composed of a combination of alumina trihydrate (ATH), acrylic, epoxy or polyester resins and pigments. It is most frequently used for seamless countertop installations." In this case, a solid surface top provides not only a seamless integrated sink and countertop, but also allows for the unusual depth of this particular design, which would be unrealistically expensive and heavy if made of, say, marble or granite. Corian is a good example of a branded solid surface material. Solid surface tops are not porous at all, which means they are very easy to keep clean and hygenic. The color is uniform throughout the surface, unlike natural stone, which can present a wide spectrum of variation in color and pattern.

Thank you! What would happen to the solid surface if a hot object was left on it. Could my curling iron Mark it?

Great question, Jodi! Solid surfaces are heat resistant to 650 degrees F. That's pretty hot, but a very hot pot just taken off the stove could certainly burn a solid surface top. A curling iron or flat iron shouldn't go above 400 degrees F, since human hair burns at 450! Still, I would advise using caution with any heated tool on a solid surface top ~ in fact, even granite and natural stone can be damaged by high heat, so it's always best to use the built-in stand to support your heated hairstyling tools.
