Rental Bedroom help

We are renting a place for about a year or two before moving and the bedroom for my son has ugly paneling & dark woods including on the ceiling. The windows are very small so not much light enters either. It has potential, I feel but I’m not sure where to begin. The carpet is light blue/gray. We have a gray plaid sort of comforter for my son but will be buying a new bed. Probably will not have any dressers since there is so much storage with the built in & closets. I do not think we are allowed to paint anything. Help? 1st photo is looking into the room from doorway, second is wall on right side, 3rd wall on the left, 4th photo taken from desk area toward closet, there are drawers below closet also- please don’t mind boxes- in process of moving in. Hmm . . . what about peel and stick wallpaper in a light color or pattern? A couple of mirrors on the wall opposite the 2 small windows to reflect what light you do have. I'd center the bed between the 2 windows and add fun painted nightstands/end tables. A single drape at each window that can be pulled to the outside would soften things. See Pottery Barn "Emily & Merritt Ticking Stripe Drape". A desk chair and maybe a fun bean bag chair, too. The plus is there is lots of room and it is only temporary. Good luck!

Since you can't paint, why not take advantage of the current colors/style and go for a cowboy ranch room? Place the head of the bed under the two windows. You might find removable decals to add to the ambiance on the lighter walls. If he has restrictions about what movable items can be in his room, you could add more light by plugging two corded wall sconces to hang right and left above that built-in desk between the two closets. Someone handy might DIY the rustic mason jar sconce below. If that is his TV, you might prefer to set it on the desk and hang sconces right and left of his bed, using the location and wiring for the one already there and duplicating that with a corded one on the other side. Cord covers will keep curious hands away. Cowboy fabrics are readily available if you want to make short little curtains to hang on those rods.

Definitely going to put the bed between those windows-leaning towards a metal platform bed rather than introducing yet another wood color..any thoughts? My son is 16 & has special needs so the decor will be tricky-I like those mason jar lights but he would have them broken in no time. :/ I like the idea of the peel & stock wallpaper, it would depend on cost & durability- dont want to stick too much money into a place we won’t be staying, but I want my son to feel like he has a special space. He currently loves The Beatles, Elvis, Crayons & some of the Disney/Pixar films..I would like it to be not too “juvenile” but still very appealing to him. Thanks so much for the ideas so far... it gives me some more ideas to think over

Your best option might be to increase lighting by any means within your budget. A mirror on wall directly across from window could bounce some light around. I’ve seen photos of rope lights being placed around the perimeter of a room at the ceiling. Looks kinda cool and something a teenager would like. They can be used to spell words on a wall too. Perhaps referencing his fav Beatles song?
