I think a warm white countertop would look great. I wouldn't do herringbone on the back splash though. Keep the back splash simple with horizontal lines to better blend with the modern style of cabinets. You could do stacked subway, or longer subway tiles in a brick pattern.

I understand calidesigns point about the herringbone, but my neighbor did a herringbone in a similar kitchen and I was surprised how nice it came out. She did not use a contrasting grout which I think was the way to go. It is a harder and more complicated install, so it might cost more.

A good way to go is to pick a light color from the countertop to do the backsplash. Your cabinets are warm, so don't go too cool for the countertop. Bring a door with you when you look to set next to samples, and the bigger the countertop sample, the better.

From your photo it looks like you have white dishes.

If you use off-white counters and off-white backsplash, do you think they will look dingy in comparison?

Also, holding your white plates up to your cabinets, see how they look. If they look good to you, then you can go with white counters and backsplash.

As for the backsplash, you can run the subway tiles horizontally, and for more interest, just in the area below the range hood run the subway tiles in the herringbone pattern with a thin tile border all around the square area to delineate that square area.

cooler whites . Great with cabs and hardware. Add interest with slight gray grout lines. Keep that in mind when looking for the backsplash tile...various subway configurations would be fine.....pick what you like: ...generally simple, but still, different sizes and layouts to choose from. I'd go hi grade quality and finish but stay away from off white , avoid over embellishing w details . Aim for simple and polished looking. Love the hardware finish you have.
