Something has attacked my fruit? - what to do?

It is, I think, a plum. The green fruits are now getting to be about 1.5" and today I noticed that most of them seem to have a pinprick that has oozed a drop of sap.

I am wondering if an insect has maybe laid eggs in the developing fruit -- should I remove and destroy them all? And what do you recommend that I do to prevent this next year?

I bag my apples with sandwich bags to minimize spraying, but will that work with plums?

( I am not 100% sure this is a plum because it was labeled an apple, but when it leafed out I could tell that was wrong; when it first set fruit this year I thought maybe a cherry, but the fruits now look very similar to the native plum that I have.)
