I was wondering if anyone would comment on this. It seems like every spring the birds will show up in my blooming apple tree and do the same thing! They peck and rip at the flowers like crazy. I don't believe that they're pecking at insects because I've never seen insects on the flowers at the time that would explain their behavior. It really is weird.

yeah, there's some "splaining on the web, but it doesn't quite fit the action. There's a small notion that a bit is retained, and they use it to feed their young. But,TBH, it just looks like a rock band trashing a Hotel room

Perhaps some kind of food search like squirrels do? Squirrels will ravage green fruit, biting each off, testing it, dropping it, and going on to the next one.
