For example. My girlfriend only wears brown, black, white, ecru and gray. Her kitchen is brown and black and her house reflects those colors with pops of red and lime green.

I wear all colors and my house reflects that I love color so I've incorporated color into my house and my kitchen. Not bold color, but color. Both kitchens work great because they reflect who the owner is.

Espresso-anything has been out for 7 years or more. Your OP pic does look like it was shot in black-and-white. If you want to make the island cabinetry a different color, how about something cheerful like royal blue or emerald green or if you want softer, a creamy yellow?

Nothing is competing, it is a very neutral palette. If that’s what you are looking for, it looks great!

I like your choices -- they are pretty and appear to coordinate well. It is a nice neutral color scheme and you can certainly add more color with accents so unlike some other posters I am not worried about the lack of color in your base choices. You didn't mention what your flooring is though -- that is a critical element. Sharing what flooring you have/intend to put in will help with responses. My only small critique on your present choices is that I don't love using three metal elements (matte black, stainless, and satin brass). I would pair those choices down to two if I were you (which two depends on hardware in the rest of the open space and the overall look you are going for).

It’s okay to add real color.

It’s also okay to not want a lot of color. To each their own! In the case of your own, I don’t think anything is competing and that backsplash will look great! I think the brass hardware with the veining is plenty of visual interest. The overall aesthetic strikes me as classic and traditional/transitional (also like the idea of the black faucet!). What style is the rest of the home?

There's no competition between those selections. It's been done 1000's of times.

Are those your current cabinets in the background? If so, they look just like the new ones.

Kaitlin- yes we did use it and love it. No grout to clean or stone to seal!

Was it really as expensive as everyone is making it out to be? I’m expecting more than quartz but not as much as a real calacatta slab..
