Looking for advice on fireplace surround tile. We are building a new house. Attached are rough mocks of what the great room will Hopefully look like. We are using a whiteish 3×6 travertine in a herringbone pattern around the fireplace. I am wondering if we should just frame the firebox with a framed edge or take tile all the way on the sides and up to meet the cedar mantel. The rest of the wall will be painted drywall in Agreeable Grey. Our style tends to learn more modern. Option 1 is nice because it feels more simple and clean to me. Option 2 frames the fireplace nicely but leaves a "blank" area on the sides and below the mantel. Which do you prefer?
