IME, very few vines pair well with another type of vine. Much like groundcovers in this regard, one will always exceed the growth of the other and overwhelm it, often to the point of smothering it. I would give each vine the space it requires.

Climbing roses are not really vines at all, but just a living support system for a clematis vine. And even when pairing two clems togther, it is important to match them for size, growth rate and pruning requirements. And some types of clematis are simply too vigorous to grow on anything but a wall or fence or traditional support system.

I'm in Zone 10b in Southern California. There are a few areas that I'm looking to add vines to--a couple of full walls & also some trellises. Lots of sun available for hours.

Believe me, gardengal, I'm watching the vine sizes--there's a clematis montana that is going to get its own wall. Otherwise, though, I keep reading various garden articles suggesting pairing vines & saying they should have similar growing habits & needs, but so far they've been short on examples. What vines do people pair?

Unless it is two of the same species, they don't. And even that can be fraught with peril.....can you imagine the real estate 2 clematis montanas would consume??
