I like the color in the brick. Maybe you just need a colorful rug. I wouldn't change it. It works with so many design styles and will never really go out of style for a brick treatment. Maybe add some white to the rest of the room to tie in the bookcase units. White accessories on the fireplace mantle and pillow fabrics with white. Choose whatever accent color you like for your style.

I wouldn't mess w/ the brick. (I've seen rookwood tile painted over w/ glossy white.) Alternatively, I'd tone down that ultra white on the cabinets and shelves. A warm white or cream would be a less jarring contrast. The above suggestion [from L B Interiors] of a colorful rug and bright accents is very good. It would be helpful to see the rest of the room.

What don't you like about it. I think if you were to add some large accessories on the bricks it will help balance the fireplace wall. The tv is large and heavy, and by placing large vases or sculptures on the brick ledge it will instantly update it.

I agree with the above commenters who think the white is too white and that the book cases would better in cream to tie in with that brick. I would also encourage you to repaint the back of the open shelves in a colour pulled from the bricks themselves as the rust is over-powering it and doesn't seem to come from anywhere. The chair in the photo is an example of something that looks liked it was chosen with the brick in mind.

I would do all of this BEFORE painting brick this brick which is actutually a nice colour that could work with many colour schemes. Not nearly as bossy as red brick, for example.

I would also like to know more about what is going on in the rest of the room/house though, and find out more about where you sit on the contrast continuum before suggesting bold accents.

The tv will always be a big part of the fireplace so changing the brick's color won't change the feel by very much. To make the whole area work a bit better as a whole, I would paint the bookcases (and backs) a soft beige and the mantle as well.
