There aren't really groundcover roses. There are roses that are altitudinally challenged, but most of those are very lax climbers.

I have sweet summer clematis. Is that too vigorous to mix with the carpet roses in your opinion?

Yes. It is a big vine (12'+) and not one of the groundcover types of clems. It is a vining type and if not provided with a support, it will climb up and through the roses. They won't exactly coexist neatly side by side :-)

I'm not sure if you had in mind intergifolia type of non-climbing clematis, but I've recently started to grow one of those, C. durandii, without any trellis or obelisk support, hoping it will scramble through my nearby rose shrubs. I'll not train it, just let it do its thing and see what happens. Another known variety of this kind is 'Arabella.' To my eye, their blue flowers nicely combine with pastel pink or cream colored roses.

'Arabella' is an excellent choice for this usage!! I find durandii less suitable as it is a long, lanky scrambler. Mine puts out long, sparsely leafed stems to 8-10' or more and flowers only at the terminal ends. I did have it growing through a large rhody but it was almost invisible and I moved it out this spring. Still don't have a good idea of where to plant it so it can actually be appreciated......... :-)

gardengal, thanks for the heads-up about durandii. I'll keep an eye on it. It does have large leaves so far, no buds yet... given the size of its leaves and your experience with flowering, I'm already thinking to perhaps try to raise it as a perennial rather than as a rambler through roses... but I'll just wait and see what happens. I saw some beautiful photos with roses...
