Well, what do you like?

For me, the advice to hang drapes high and wide doesn't work. High just looks like...I dunno...a receding hairline? But that's what you see as a "recommendation".

Wide, I think the window should show as much as you can, but I like the drapes to overlap the window by 1/4 of the opened drape width...

You have a lovely room--it is dark, but the window and the light fireplace balances a lot of that out...Tell him he did good :)

A good rule of thumb is to multiply your window width by 1.3. This will give you a good size for your rod allowing for stackback. You want your curtains to cover at least some of the glass.

As for height, I think I'd hang the rod about even (maybe slightly higher depending) with the ledge on the other wall. I'd wouldn't hang them too high since that's too much wall space that would show.

I think I'd pick out a lighter color from the rug, to lighten up the room.
