Wall Decorating Ideas

This seems to be the only wall in our home that looks "unfinished." Any ideas on how to fill it up?

The buffet needs to stay because space is limited.

Thanks, Andrea. I like the idea of a larger painting. Any thoughts on adding a shelf closer to the ceiling and alternating small pieces of art?

I don't really like the idea of alternating small pieces of art work up there above the mirror and art work- if that's what you are talking about. In my opinion it would look too busy and almost tchotchke like. You don't want a cluttered look on this wall. Everything else in your home looks very clean and well organized.

Instead of thinking about "filling up" space, think of the whole wall as a composition. It doesn't need to be filled as long as everything works together. It looks like it's not possible for the buffet to move to behind the table, so I would put something narrower than the current mirror over it and a larger piece of art to the right. What you have there now isn't bad, but the proportions could be better, I think.

Part of my post is missing after I added pictures? I had suggested removing the mirror and adding a lamp to the buffet. Also, it seems that the painting should be lowered a tad. Ignore the stuff above the buffet.

Andrea, I think you're right about nixing the shelf idea. It would look cluttered.

I used a skinnier mirror, added a framed print to the wall, and nudged the buffet to the left a bit. My goal was to unify the wall rather than have it look like two separate vignettes. I think a gallery to the right of the buffet might be more successful.

Since the buffet is staying,I would find a different mirror. Definitely slimmer but first,I'd find some much larger art. One piece would be my preference....but not an oversize flamingo...unless that's your thing.

Thanks, groveraxle. Wish I could do that on a photo. What app did you use?

Groveraxle, I thought that I loved my dark mirror, but the thinner, taller one that picks up the design on my buffet is just beautiful.

I think your room is very nice. I really love the colors in your rug? Could you tell us where you got it or any info???

Not a pro but I think your buffet and mirror are nice, to me it's the painting that is wrong, the wrong shape. You need something larger there, maybe a large frameless canvass to balance the buffet and mirror.

I think I would have the mirror over the buffet and nothing else on the wall. You have the chandelier. Sometimes less is more. You need to rest the eye.

Lydia, I use Photoshop. Maybe just one more framed print hung below your current art. Something needs to balance that buffet. (I notice you seem to have a bit of Asian flair here.)

Replace mirror with slimmer style. Remove all art, it is distracting from your pretty accessories and table.

CindyR, I got the rug from Houzz and I keep trying to review it and the site won't accept my photos and review. The rug is from Exquisite Rugs sold through Houzz, Konya Turkish Oushak style, teal, 9x12. It is really beautiful. We just received it. I was ready to vacuum it but it doesn't shed.

What if I replace the painting with this mirrored sculpture?

If you replace the painting with that mirrored sculpture ("sculpture" being a generous description, IMO), then your wall will be way less interesting.

Or two of these, one inverted and staggered next to the other to form one piece. (49"H x 27"W each)
