what is eating my lettuce?

I planted lettuce plants in my garden and a week later they were almost all eaten off. Thinking it was a rabbit I put a 3 foot fence around the lettuce bed and put in new plants. Again in a few day the plants were eaten off. Now I see a tunnel in the bed with a hole. The plants are being eaten off not pulled into the tunnel. What is eating my plants and how do I get rid of it.

Deer, rabbits, groundhogs, any rodent.

A tall fence with quarter inch hardware wire along bottom and out away from fence along the ground, with electric wires, traps of all sizes, repellent, a gun.

It's a gardener's lifelong work and annoyance.

The garden already has a tall fence. This is a second shorter fence since baby bunnies have managed to get in before. They don't leave a tunnel, nor do deer. The tunnel is to small for a groundhog. Very frustrating!

Maybe chipmunks...

Where are you located and how wide is the hole? Animals can climb fences and jump over them. The hole may be another animal than what's eating your plants.

I live in central Kansas. The hole is about 1 1/2 inches across.
