when does a sunflower stop growing?

I'm growing american giant hybrid sunflowers and they were 4 feet tall when i left and 2 weeks later i just got home and they are about 7-8 feet and they have a small flower head forming. Does this mean they are done growing or can they still grow a bit more? thanks
