The ones in the planters are called Aloe Hedgehog, a miniature aloe that flowers continuously through winter. Very hardy and drought tolerant. Every year, with the very first flower a hummingbird will appear within a day. They are indigenous to South Africa, where we are also situated. Another one that is very similar is the Aloe Piri Piri.
