huge office wall question

Hi everyone,

Do you have any ideas on what I should do with this huge wall in my office (across from the desk)? We just moved into this home a few months ago and I still don't know what to do. Ideally, I'd really like to have some tall, open-backed bookshelves but I get stuck on where to place them - - do I center them? Do I add a little reading area in the middle to break them up? The room is wide open (no door). The piano and desk need to stay. The ceilings are 10 feet high and that wall itself is almost 15 ft. long. It's kind of a funny shaped narrow room...we are stumped - - so is our little beagle Walter :).

Any suggestions you have would be much appreciated!

Well Carrey, I´d put a pure white clear three column bookshelf with irregular shelfs (see the enclosed pictures - just imagine the narrow bookcase to be white as the library in my linked project Library for an international writer). The case is that narrow bookshelf makes the space optically wider. I´d definitely not place it to the very centre. Instead I´d put it asymetrically (golden cut would be the best, but I´m not sure the space allow such a placement) Opposite a piano I would place a shallow moss wall that could inspire a piano player or make her/he to be relaxed at least.

These are great ideas and awesome pictures! Thank you! I love that first bookshelf. I have quite a few books I need to store and would want/need more storage than just that. I wonder if I could do two?

If you mean two columns - to my mind having a pair is not the right choice - this paired regularity could evoke a ladder or gymnastic ribs. If you mean two pieces of single bookcases side by side - it could be too "stuffy". But one bookshelf consisting from 3 to unlimited columns are absolutely ok. You can even add a single doors to some parts - I'd suggest hem in the color of wall (in this way the doors would be sophistically "not visible" very much). See another enclosed choice.

I would want a comfy armchair in that sunny corner. Bookshelves on the long wall and maybe some plants.

    Is this your dog?

The first thing I would do is turn that desk around so you are facing out instead of facing the wall. Then on the opposite wall, I'd probably use a credenza instead of tall bookcases, and fill the rest of the wall with art.

I ruined my neck working on a non-office chair. Six months of physical therapy and a real chair solved that problem. I am always amazed at the number of questions about home offices and there is seldom a discussion of what tasks need to be included in the storage requirements. I have three four drawer file cabinets, six two drawer file cabinets, a storage cabinet for all the paper, Ink, file folders, etc, and three bookcases. Form follows function.

Important to know if the office is a working office -- one that will be used for business that includes visiting clients, or office -- where the computer will sit for browsing and answering emails and paying household bills, as @remodeling1840's comment clarifies.

diO - ha! Hilarious! I've never seen that book. It would be fitting, LOL! Great ideas, by the way - - I feel the same about an armchair there AND bookshelves - - just trying to figure out how to arrange it all.

Remodeling1840 - agreed! This awful chair will be the first thing to go once I get this room going - - sorry to hear about your back. :(

espc10 and Remodeling1840 - I couldn't agree more re. function. This office is used for a music room but more so as a work area for me. I usually spend about 2-4 hours a day on the computer in this room. I will be having video conferences so it's important that the background my clients see will look nice/professional. I do need some storage space for hanging files but not a lot - I need more for books and would love a place to put some of my framed photos. Thanks for all the great ideas, everyone.

grover axle - I absolutely love that wall - - the credenza, gallery wall, etc. Beautiful. Do you happen to remember what color that shade is on the wall? Thanks for the great ideas.
