Staining a wood arbor

I realize there will be a lot of maintenance over the years but we love the look of wood. I plan on a finish coat or two of a spar marine varnish.

My my question is what is the best or a very good stain to use? Oil based? If you could recommend a brand that would be great.

I have Penofin on my cedar fence and am very happy with it (3 years since install and finish). I don't think a spar urethane topcoat is recommended with that, however.

So should I just go with exterior stain? Is that easier to maintain?

Yes go with an exterior stain. By "easier to maintain", do you mean it won't fail (peal prematurely, fade to a horrible color, etc.)? Most interior stains would not be acceptable.

Well I assume I need to retreat every couple years. I’m reading about Spar Varnish being a lot of work to retreat. I want to avoid stripping n doing a lot of sanding
