Immortality iris: holding my breath!

last modified: 7 years ago

It’s in its third year, look at how many blooms I will get! I counted over 30! I’ll post another picture once it’s in full bloom.

Wow! Again, you amaze, Mazerolm! That's a lot of buds! Immortality is a rebloomer right?

@popmama: Thanks!! It’s supposed to be the most reliable rebloomer, but my summers are too short, I doubt it will ever happen over here. I really don’t mind when it blooms its head off like this in Spring! :)

Oh I agree. I'd rather have a giant burst of blooms than a few on repeat. Metaphor put out like 5 blooms on one stalk this year. What a thrill!

Metaphor is beautiful!! I’d like to add an orange iris next year, to plant in front of a smokebush!

Immortality is a funny iris. I had it several years, no bloom at all. But it multiplied quite a bit. I divided it and moved part of it to the front yard, both clumps have bloomed spring and fall since then.

Last year, I really wanted pink iris. I purchased several in the pink family: Cherry Blossom Song, Wild Irish Rose, Jennifer Rebecca and Blowing Kisses. For some reason, this year I am highly attracted to orange and coral varieties. I just purchased Burn and Coral Splendor. I really wanted this one orange one called Oh James but it was sold out already. I hope I'm as into orange next year when they bloom as I am now!

@Nancy: glad you finally got some blooms!

@popmama: love your choices! I ordered a few pink irises this year as well: Raspberry Blush, Florentine Silk, Lover’s Holiday, Don’t Stop Believing and Pink Parfait. I also ordered Very Very Good (purple) and Merlot (burgundy). I find there are so many beautiful varieties it makes it really hard to choose!! :)

I'm not a real iris fancier (have a few that came with the house) and have planted some arils because I like the fantastic color combos, but I must say that Cherry Blossom Song is very very attractive.

    @popmama: here’s a sample! :)

    Don’t Stop Believing

Lovers’ Holiday: this the one I’m looking forward to the most!

I think I have seen Florentine Silk in a friend's yard here. Thanks, dbarron. I do feel pretty fortunate in the error! I need to move it somewhere that it can multiply more freely.

My Immortality is in full bloom! It’s the first time I notice how wonderful they smell...you really have to put your nose in there! :)

It’s gorgeous, Mazerolm! It sure does have plenty of blooms. Mine reblooms for me, but neither flush has anywhere near the amount of blooms yours does. It looks wonderful in that shot with the small golden shrubs behind it. Lisa

    Immortality and Honky Tonk Blues

    I love irises.

Wow that Honky Tonk really is blue! Remarkable.

I bought a very large potted Immortality 3 + years ago in the fall. I am still waiting! Have never yet seen a bloom. While a purple one bought at the same time and place has produced from the first spring. I don't know what I am doing wrong. It looks healthy. Is it picky?

The same thing happened to me. I asked someone from our iris society why it did not bloom. She said it can be picky. It does wonderfully when it is happy. Try moving it to a different spot. That worked for me, and I really don't know why.
