The climbers against the wall on the left are all paired with clematis and underplanted with various other things (woody and herbacious perennials, grasses, etc)

This climber is "Mon Jardin & Ma Maison" Meilland, 1998. The clematis I forget (Jackmanii probably)

The rose below is Kordes' "Schön vom See" -- it looked super healthy and was blooming a ton -- it stood out as so bushy and nice that I took a picture to show you all.

Also, if anyone is in the market for a healthy, screaming-red climber, try Kordes' "Tradition 95"

Below: Mermaid climbing a very large pine tree. I was interested in how they did this (and shocked by how close it was planted to the pine's base -- take a look).

They made a sort of trellis for the rose by putting wire loops around the tree, with a spring in each loop so the wire wouldn't girdle the tree as it grows bigger. Clever!

How wonderful for you to be there. I wish there were a way to see fascinating foreign places without actually having to go through the hassles of traveling! It's interesting to see how the French do rose gardens, with a good degree of formality. Tantau's Schoene Maid is really beautiful, but unfortunately not available here.

I thought, as Ingrid mentions, that maybe you would like to see these things without actually having to get to Bagatelle yourselves (even from Paris, it is a bit of a hike from the nearest metro stop!). Ingrid, I posted the Tantau rose because I know many US growers are interested in seeing roses grown in the EU that we can't get in the US. It was very beautiful, but not nearly as vigorous and bushy as the peach Kordes rose in the images above it (I'm not sure we can get that one either!)
