Curiously, it sounds like the first generation was a hybrid, but successive generations came from direct harvest. If that's the case, you might have a chance.

Honeynut is a specialty open pollinated butternut. It was developed by Michael Mazourek, , Cornell University. Through selective breeding he managed to develop a shrunken butternut. Small size with concentrated flavor. Thanks, Farmerdill! If anyone reading this hasn't tried it, I recommend that you do. I roasted mine, and it was absolutely delicious. Buttercup was my favorite for years--so much more flavorful than butternut--but its vulnerability to squash borers was sometimes a problem. I could really get attached to Honeynut. I just wish it didn't share a name with a cereal. :-)

I found honey nut at Trader Joe's a few years ago and fell in love. When they didn't have any last year I decided to get some seeds and try growing. I only planted a few, because my garden space is limited. One vine died of wilt and another produced one squash. I picked it and put it in the lower pantry to cure. We'll see. I'm really hoping TJ's has them this fall. They are so incredibly good!!!
