A new vanity top in a non-busy white quartzite, a crisp white shower curtain and a nice white fluffy bath mat will make a huge difference in settling some if the tile design down.

What's in that cabinet above the toilet? Artwork would look nice there.

If it were me, I'd start with the quick fixes: a neutral shower curtain and big rug; those would hide a lot. Maybe new towels for a pop of color. Also, consider an orchid or other plant for the vanity or the top of the toilet. The good news with these "quick fixes" is that you can buy something, try it out and see how it works, and if you don't like it, return it. This might be enough to help you feel like you've made a change. If you are replacing the vanity top, custom will be $$$, but maybe you can find a pre-fab one you like.

I like the countertop! As others have suggested, I'd start with the easy stuff -- shower curtain, rug, etc. Consider paint, too. Next I'd swap out the plumbing fixtures, and maybe the light fixture (can't see what's there now). Maybe replace the mirror, too. Have fun with your project!

I don't mind your shower area tile...the floor is killing me, but fortunately you can paint it.

We have a member here who successfully did so and it's lasted many years. Your tile is different sizes so I would do it one color, but just for interest (and because I love it) here's a painted and stenciled floor...

The other issue is your counter tile...I would get myself to some granite yards and see what remnants they have....or just get a laminate in light beige/almond to coordinate with the shower tile. Paint your vanity navy.

If you can do without the storage, get rid of the cabinet above the toilet. You won't believe how much more spacious your bathroom will feel! You can add a shelf or two for towels, etc.

Don't worry. It will be lovely when it's done...

A rug in a bathroom.....mmmm, don’t like to think about what that captures—no thanks. Surely at some point you may find it worthwhile to change out all that tile. But for now I would take out that cabinet over the toilet & find a beautiful bathroom mirror and light fixtures to harmonize with the style of the rest of your house. A sleek linen-like shower curtain. In one house, I bought 2 shower panels to put on either side of the tub which helped conceal some unattractive tile. Thick, thick towels on chunky towel racks. I think you can nicely compliment and detract from the rarer dated look of the tile by adding some beautiful new touches. Good luck!

Sonja, there are lovely rugs for bathrooms that you just throw in the wash. Its an inexpensive way to bring style to the bathroom with the bonus of subduing a disliked tile floor. It’s not they are advocating for wall to wall carpet like the old days.

You don’t want to spend a lot of money but you didn’t indicate what your budget is.
Buy a shower curtain. Buy two machine-washable bathroom rugs (for in front of the sink) and some new towels and bath mats. There are good discount stores and there are always sales going on. Maybe paint the walls to match one of the lightest colors in the tile. Add a piece of glass-protected, framed art if you have a bare wall in need of a decorative item.
The tile is a bit dated, but it seems to be in pretty good condition and doesn’t need to be replaced.
You could remove the cabinet above the toilet and replace it with something shallower and less bulky-looking. You could replace the vanity for one with a solid-color top with a built-in sink. Those two pieces of cabinetry should match.
If you have plans or wishes beyond that, start saving.

How much is not a lot? I like to know what I can spend before I shop. First remove the cabinet above the toilet. Replace with nice bathroom safe art. New single color shower curtain and 2 bath rugs. Paint the cabinet and the walls (not the same color but white/light cream(what ever goes with your tile/grout) pick a light shade from the tile for the contrasting paint for either wall or cabinet. If budget allows, new counter in quartz with undermount sink. New faucet. Add a frame around the mirror.

That is one unique bathroom :) But actually, it's not all terrible, except for that extra busy floor.

I like the above suggestion to possibly paint it, assuming budget won't allow for replacement. Due to the various tile sizes, one very light neutral color should make a big difference here!

I agree with a new shower curtain, removal of the cabinet over the toilet and searching stone yards for a remnant piece of white stone. I would paint the walls a white color. Consider a “train style” metal towel rack for over the toilet with colorful towels or a bright piece of artwork. And yes, there are many washable bathroom rugs out there.
If you’re willing to paint the vanity, then consider a white as well. The floor isn’t that bad and the curtain hides the bathtub area.
Most of these ideas can be done for under $200 (except the new stone vanity top) if you’re a good shopper and painter.

IMO the floor and the accent tile kind of work together so an ew sink and counter some nice towels and a paint job and IMO a shower screen would be better than a curtain is such a small space . The shower and the floors work stop trying to hide them. Whenever I see a batrhoom where the shower curtain is closed I always think they are hiding something keep it simple a fluffy white rug hung over the side of the tub some nice fluffy towels in a hotel type holder instead of the cabinet above the toilet .

It looks good to me. I would have left the glass door. Maybe embrace the blue by painting the walls to match.

I would have left the glass door also. Now if it was a brass glass door, I would have taken it down and replaced it with a chrome one. A shower curtain makes the room look smaller.

With that said.....the bathroom looks nice to me. As mentioned replacing the vanity top to a nice solid counter white would give it an upgrade. I would take down the storage above the toilet and add art there.

I would also consider painting the vanity. Maybe a darker color of the blue tile floor.

I would go over the floor and countertop with darker grout to minimize the contrast with the blue.

I think you could find a reasonably priced counter top with integrated sink. What size is the vanity?

I agree with the thought to remove the storage cabinet over the toilet and to replace it with open shelving with folded towels. I think the wall color works well as you have it now and would use navy towels to coordinate with the tile.

I also like the idea of darkening the floor grout a few shades to minimize the contrast.

I thought that, too...dyeing the floor grout a darker color, something that will blend with the tile, a light to med bluish gray maybe. I always like a visual for things like this before I commit, so I'd probably buy some tape in a color I think would work and cut it into strips to hide the grout in a small area to see how it looks. Same with the counter tile/grout. I'd darken it a bit before I went to the expense of replacing the counter.

lbrizz - are you there? Is that floor vinyl tile?

Stain the grout in the floor to blend closely with the tiles. Get rid of the toilet cabinet. Add a second light in the room so that light comes from 2 directions, softening the shadows.

As Patricia wrote above.... Add hotel white fluffy towels & rug. Remove the looming toilet storage unit. A shower curtain will make the room feel,smaller & will fool no one if it is left closed to hide the tile, for many guests would peak behind a closed shower curtain.

A white counter top -yes! Although, the nice nice thing about the 4"tiles you have is that you can clean them with a bleach solution and not have to worry much.

Embrace the sand and blue gray scheme... Find wall art that reflects it, like these:

I agree with removing the cabinet over the toilet, as it's dark and takes up visual space. But think twice before you put a rod over the toilet to hold towels. I had mine removed when I had the bathroom painted. With the huge towels we use -- luxurious towels and sheets are always worth the money -- the rod proved useless since folded towels would drag on the toilet top or it would be ridiculously high on the wall over the toilet. If you put shelves there, they couldn't be too deep so I would consider either artwork or some glass shelves. I'd definitely consider replacing the counter top; measure your sink unit and see if you can purchase a counter top to fit that already has a nice sink in it. They sell those so you could save some money and get rid of the third color tile under the sink.

If you don't use a small throw rug in your bathroom when showering or bathing, I sure hope you don't slip and fall. We use one when showering and you can always pick it up afterwards if you want. But slippery floors are dangerous!

I will start with removing the cabinet, adding a shower curtain and rugs and updating the light fixture. Hopefully that will work. I like the idea of darkening the grout. I may try that as well. Will post when I’ve made the changes.
