The gray decorating craze was a fad that is over and done with, which is not to say you can't have a gray dining room. Just make it a light and luminous gray, and not one of the dead gray tones that have ruined so many otherwise nice rooms.

You have a lot of heavy-looking brown furniture which can make a room look dated. Take away the wooden clock, for one, and hang a large and colorful painting to give this room some life. As mentioned, a good-sized rug with beautiful colors will greatly help in that respect also. Is it possible to make the table larger? It looks rather small in relation to the sideboard. If you can find colorful porcelain to put on the table and the chest under the mirror that would help update the feeling of this room also.

Ok, its time to take down the wall paper, and the chair rail. Update the chairs by silp covering or replacing them with a lighter fabric chair, add an area rug. What color is the room behind it? Also I might consider putting the hutch on the other wall and putting the buffet with art or a mirror on the longer wall.

The wall where the buffet is is a very short wall. The China cabinet would not fit. I will recover the dining chairs to a lighter color. Not sure if I want to do anything but cover the old wallpaper. I just finished tearing down a lot of wallpaper in a large bathroom.

Wow, your dining furniture is gorgeous. I'll take it.

We do have a Lotta dark colors in here

Judith, if this traditional style is still your thing, you might have fun perusing this thread, which has some fantastic ideas, color inspiration, and creativity. For some reason, I think you might be interested in it. And maybe you'll forget the gray idea.

In my honest opinion, your lighting is really what is dating all of your spaces.

I would consider updating that on the whole, the dining room really just needs some soft touches, and the wallpaper gone, hopefully you can remove the chair rail and paint over it with the wall color not sure but I think with that little it would be better to remove it.
