Thanks all! From the window wall to the jut out is 86“, 68 of which are taken up by the bed. Between the bed and the wall then is 18”. The jut out (which yes, is here to stay) is only about 12“ wide. I’m struggling with how to place a light near that window well since it will be recessed relative to whatever I do for the jut out. to the right of the jut out is the remainder of the wall which is 29.5“. I just measured and the room is 11.5 feet deep from the entrance door and about 10.5’ on the jut out wall. Any other bed placement is tricky because the jut out will impact we put on the wall facing the window and the closet walkway will be impacted if we do the window wall. Poor planning by the builder in this house it seems.

@Lorrie H, I like that idea. Would you move the bed closer to the window and ditch the nightstand on that side and then put the lights on either side of the headboard? I really like that first light option do you know the source?

Be practical. Who are the guests most likely to use this room- young couple or aged parents & frequent bathroom trips? No one wants to climb over the sleeping partner to get out of bed for the purpose of using a toilet.

Lamps are too big for the tables.... Look for thinner lamps which will leave room on the table for a clock- book-....phone, etc.

Maybe I could do something like this? Very narrow and side table but it’s gone through them so there will be plenty of room on the table for a drink, phone, etc.

great, sounds like @decoenthusiaste had the same idea. Do I do the same thing on the jut out side or a table and table lamp?

Could you put a small table/stand with a lamp on it, on one side of the bed and on the other side of the bed a floor lamp...that floor lamp won't take up much room. Sometimes guests want to read or need light to get into bed. Then on the other side of the jut out, a small dresser with mirror and lamp (if needed). These drawers in the dresser will be for guests to put their things.

Table lamps- Yes! Why? No hideous cords hanging down the wall, as would be the case with sconces. Lamps are easy- Plug and done. Most ppl can reach the switch without a problem. No electrician's bill. No cords, no wires or cords dangling down the wall.

Wall sconces require you to cut into the drywall to hide the wiring. If you don't, then It looks tacky when the cord is exposed, hanging from the fixture and down the wall. The switch might be easy for an aging guest to reach, for aging can be coupled with limited range of motion in the upper extremities.

You can use corded wall lamps with a cord cover. It they don't come with matching covers, you can paint hardware store cord covers to match the wall color.

I was thinking corded sconce as there is a 0% chance my husband will bear the expense to do electrical work. I will definitely find one for that wall by window. Will look for very narrow nightstand. On the other side, I like the idea of chest with lamp, but is that too far from bed for the light source? Also I Hadn’t considered the necessity of a chest given there is a full walk in closet in there.

I think the space to the right of the jut needs something. If you do a small chest you could still use a lamp on it even if you hang the corded walls sconces. Another idea would be to put a small bench with mirror above it.

Because of the jut you have 18inches on the left side of the bed, so finding something for that space will be challenging. Most small nightstands and wall mount stands are 20" wide. I did find some on Etsy that are 15" with a small drawer. I would probably do white or off white for the nightstand. Everything on Etsy is handmade so you can order the color you like.

a way to deal with a bump out is to build out the headboard wall, if you have the room.

Before ordering art, I would recommend you cut pieces of paper in the size of the art and position on the wall first to make sure that the size and layout will work.

@Laura, unfortunately the room isn’t very deep (11.5’), so the side of the bed would hit the jut out and allow for no access to that side of bed from there. There’s also a closet door that opens into that window wall, so nightstand would be tricky to place there. :( The window is also not centered on that wall.

@myrica4, Are you suggesting a shelf above the headboard but don’t pull the headboard out from the wall?

@DKHaas, I also have an aversion to word art, but appreciate the suggestion. Maybe some kind of simple art with flow in it similar to the feel you get from the script you showed there.

How deep is the jut out? Is there any chance you could pull the bed forward away from the wall enough to clear it and move the bed to the right a foot to a foot and a half? It would complicate art placement, but might be worth a try.

I was referring to the wooden headboard wall with the 2 floating tables. I think you need to do something about the crowded bed situation. How many people will be using bed? 1 or 2?

the jut out is 10”. i wasn’t sure what to do with the dead space behind the bed if we went that route, but suppose bookshelves above could make sense.

pulling out the lower wall to be flush with the bump out was what I was thinking and posted pic examples above. One pic has shelves and sconces, one has a single ledge and lamps. It would give freedom for a wider generous bed wall & nightstands, with a select area above the headboard recessed over the bed symmetrically. Utilities are concealed creatively like this often in basements. The recessed area can be a ledge and you can do this with or without a headboard, if you are already “set“ on using that bed.

But then I read where you say your husband would hardly agree to even do hardwired sconces, thought it would be unlikely he would agree to scab out the wall 7.5” to balance the room (a little 2x4 framing, wiring, drywall and shelf).

Oh, gotcha. Yes, Unfortunately he’s not interested in doing much down there because he doesn’t care. It’s big enough on that side that you can get through although it’s a bit tight. I may play around with moving it over on top of the bump out but we will see.

How about a diy skinny table to bring the bed out to meet the bump out? Here is a neat idea for a table behind a couch. You could do 2 shorter ones or even 3 to go from side wall to wall, You could make it yourself!

We have almost the same set up - a large basement bedroom with a small wall for a queen bed, it’s a tight 92” & has nightstands that don’t match. just checked - one nightstand 15” wide, the other side has a nested table 12” wide. both have table lamps, the bed has a headboard. It is certainly not a showcase down there, but works OK. Would love to maybe one day do the wall sconces and other ideas here,

Update! Decided to keep bed centered despite the jut out. Even with more space on either side, I choose to install wall lamps (will get cord covers too). Switched the overhead lightbulb to softer light although that’s not on in these pics. Plan to do something like the attached look for nightstand look - maybe a simpler nightstand style but I like the styling of it, with the art.

I really like the nightstand. Where is it from ?

The post I referenced with the nightstand said it’s from a place only available for trades people aka designers so I’m not sure.
