First batch of convention photos

The convention was wonderful. We had hosta growing weather; a nice steady drizzle. I did feel sorry for the tour garden owners. 5 bus loads of people plus those who drove trampling the lawns made a muddy mess. I was lucky enough (not) to be on the bus that got a mile from the hotel and stranded us for an hour.

For me, it was all about the gardens, so no leaf show shots. Most of the pictures are close-ups of individual hostas. That's because I was "shopping" with my camera and landscape shots would have been full of people. I forgot to mark which garden we visited first, second, etc. There are a few I recognize, so I'll put owner's names on those.

There were some interesting speakers. I particularly enjoyed the water features guy, who showed some affordable options as well as the ponds for lottery winners.

I found myself drawn to the old Sea series of hostas. This is Sea Frolic.

Hakumuo was new to me, very pretty.

I had passed up Pinani Island Surf, but after seeing it in the garden, went back and bought one.

That happened to me a lot. Some just look better in the garden than in a pot, I guess.

This is stop #2, the garden of Audrey and Jim Temmer. They had a beautiful mass planting out front.

I'm pretty sure the front rows are Curly Fries and Halcyon, but I've forgotten the IDs of the back rows.

Mystic Star went on the "want" list

I was excited to see this hosta at two of the gardens. I've had it for years labeled Nakai and thought it was a bad ID. It's not in the Hosta Library, and looking for Nakai nothing turned up. Now I know its proper name is rectifolia Nakai I'll have to fix the label.

given a choice between misty rain .. coats and umbrellas... [anything short of a thunderstorm]

versus blinding sun and intense humid heat ...

ill take the rain forest version any day ...

yes, gardens were stunning, totally enjoyed my time there. I will see if I have any pics to add to your collection. I too tried taking hosta pics and not people, many pics of hostas I have to see what the future holds...

Really need to move my Hakumuo as it is on the edge of the walking path and hubby and dogs keep trashing it. Pinani Island Surf is absolute darling!

Wow, you managed to get landscape photos that weren't full of people. I did try, but they all have a stray pair of legs or a couple people in the background.

How bad were you? I had 16 hostas by the time I got home, but three were freebies, one was because I needed a "Grace" hosta for a kitty grave and 4 came from a stop in Dubuque. I would have loved Grace Wins, but it's in TC and won't be out for 2 to 3 years. I had to settle for Amazing Grace. Great name but a meh hosta.

I had a hard time finding things in the vendor area. In the Country and Bob Solberg's booths were OK, but some of the others were just piles of pots. Jack Barta had nice big hostas on the floor, but I had both hands full and couldn"t get down to read the tags without bumping people. Probably just as well, the garden is already full.

I was not bad much. One streaker from Solberg and few minies from Jack and couple of perennials. LOTG had ton of $$$ stuff including DB. Someday.

My real estate is non existing so can not afford add much. I almost participated in auction for Old cardboard box hosts but it was very late.

Am getting it from Cochato though.

Lindalana, is there anyway to name some of the hostas in pics with only a few plants? I am most interested in your first photo, the really tall very light green/lime hosta?

Did you happen to write down auction prices? My back didn't like the bus rides; I left the auction at nine and missed the Saturday banquet completely. Any idea what Peter Ruh sold for? I think it was 183.

I do love streakers. Don't do any breeding, but adore the way they look.

Jack Barta was talking about Old Cardboard Boxes. He said he decided not to carry it for now because it's hot, new, and expensive. He thinks it will come down in a few years.

We have five acres, but digging brush did a number on me this year. I think the beds aren't going to get any bigger. Maybe limited RE is a blessing in disguise.

I left right after 112 or so at auction, was fun but a bit long considering one had to get up early for bus.

Most pics can be enlarged and I think labels are visible better that way.

Tiffany glass is work of garden owners. Entire garden is very artistic, husband did all iron art too. It is in second album.
