What's going on with that bench? Hang some art.

Keep it simple and just add a nicer banister of beautiful wood, something that will visually pop from the wall and call it a day. These look like steep stairs. I don't think anyone needs to have artwork to look at while going up and down.

Moulding/trim on the walls running up ...does WONDERS for stairs! :)
