Remove backsplash tiles or cut out drywall altogether?

My kitchen has a tile backsplash from the 80s. I would like to remove the tiles and have the walls underneath repaired as needed and painted. Is this possible? Or would it be faster (and cheaper) just have the entire drywall removed? I'd like to do this before replacing the countertop. Below are photos of the kitchen and a closeup of the tiles.

Who knows for sure. Only way is to try and pop off the tile. I would make the decision then.

Did they mount upper cabinets on top of the tile? If not, whoever laid these is an ARTIST because those cutouts are pristine. If the cabinets are on top of tile then it all just got a lot harder. At the risk of inducing scope creep, if you do this work to the backsplash then you might want to check on the cost of refreshing the laminate counters while everything is torn apart.

For the answer to the original question I would ask a plasterer, honestly.

If you are replacing the countertops, should do both at same time.

You replace the counter then do the backsplash and IMO tile is needed in most of the area you have tile now.Before choosing either change those bulbs to some LEDs in a 4000K range to keep everything from looking yellow

Here's another crazy question: as ugly as those tiles are, they are in great shape, solidly and smoothly installed. What if I just tiled over it? Any thoughts or tips on surface prep?
