Hi. A quick tip would be to lay out a couple newspaper cut outs of different sizes on the floor to see how things will fit for you. You can also use blue tape. The space looks to be able to accommodate at least a 48" table. This tip can also help you with other furniture you might need for the rest of your home. Thanks Chrissy and mmilos. How many chairs would fit around a 48" table? We have 4 in my family, but if we had guests I would like to be able to add 2. If I have to choose between furntiture that looks too big vs. seating only 4, I prefer to get the proportions right, and use the dining room if we have guests. Or alternatively, maybe a 48" round with a leaf that we can make it into an oval. Would that work?

@ siangray - calculate the circumference, and allow 24" per person for a round table, 30" for a table with straight edges. You can always squish more people around a round table than an oblong or square table! We have a 52" round table, and it sits 6 comfortably, and with the leaf, making it 52" x 62", 8 is ok, 10 is a friendly squash.

Calculate 24 inches all around for chair scoot and sit space, plus 18-24" walk-around area for getting behind the chairs to serve people, then what is left is the space where the table will go.That should tell you how big a round table can fit in this spot.

Thanks for all the help with the table size. I am going to seek a 48" round with a leaf, but will only use the leaf if we need the extra seating. The next step is getting a light fixture. What size diameter is appropriate if the table under it is 48" diameter. (room size is approx 9 1/2' X 11' see shape in picture in first post). I believe i read that the fixture should be about 1/2 the size of the table, but I am not sure if that is a good rule of thumb for circular tables too. Any thoughts?
