Aristocrat. Three years old. crown rotted over the winter, basically starting over with 3 small divisions.

Few duds. I think I have a spot with low drainage so hosta did not overwinter well

This one's the stud! Piedmont Gold on the edge of a construction zone. It lost it's shade tree so is getting full sun and has been trampled on a few times. Looks pretty good considering.

Duds.... well, not the hostas fault, but here is an example of what hail did to my hostas throughout. Not harsh enough to shred, but little marks all over them.

This one is an interesting leaf from June Fever.

Irish Luck shows it better. The newer leaves are nice and glossy. That's how the whole thing looked before the darn hail.

This little dud is Sleeping Beauty. Moved last fall so settling in to its new home. It's throwing some interesting leaves in an attempt to show it deserves a chance. I am hopeful for it. .....I just noticed it may have settled too deep. Might need a lift.

These aren't duds, but I wanted to present a cautionary tale to all who plant very close together. This is what happens when they grow up. Crowded! Some are due for a move this fall.

I love looking at all these Hostas, adding more to my wish list and subtracting a few duds from my wish list too.

Duds

Lakeside Black Satin, I should give up on it. LS Black Satin just looks sickly. I should give up on it, I think I keep it for the challenge of it.

Hidden Cove, looked better last year. Yesterday I dug it up and separated it. Hopefully it will help.

Love Blueberry Muffin and T. Aureonebulosa--just got them. My Guardian Angel is a star it's huge and about 2 years old.

In 2 years the Guardian Angel has at least doubled in size, it's in an area that really brings out the best in my hostas. Too bad the rest of the yard doesn't do as well for me.

Miles your Guardian Angel is amazing, what type of light does it receive? Mine it's also 2 years old and not Hayes as large. I still love it though.

Some mid day sun not a lot it’s just behind the house and then filtered afternoon sun. Lots of the hosta behind my house do well. Just across the lawn other beds do not have the same light or soil. I will post pics of the bed later.

OK, ignore the weeds. I decided to dig brush this spring, and after a week, my back turned on me. So things are weedier than usual, the mulching still is only half done, and I skipped planting most of the pots. Fortunately it rained like crazy, so I didn't have to water. Almost everything looks great.

Humpbacked Whale. If you look on the lower right, you can see where it swallowed my walking path. Yes, I know that's a sperm whale, but I thought it was close enough.

Duds:

In the background are Niagara Falls, Bridal Falls, and Angel Falls. They were big and healthy last year. I doused them with a bleach solution and at least they're alive. The pretty boy in front is Sharp Dressed Man.

Studs:

Five 'O Clock Shadow, planted two years ago and exceeding expectations. I wish the variegation showed more.

Oil Paint and Pineapple Upsidedown Cake. OP was so small three years ago, and it wilted as soon as it was planted. I had to baby it for a couple years, but it's finally looking good.

Dud:

Five 'OClock Somewhere and Five 'O Clock Shadow were planted at the same time and were the same size. Shadow looks great, Somewhere has barely grown. Shadow was in a spinout bag and Somewhere wasn't. I'm not sure if that's the difference, but Somewhere is in a bag now.

Studs - or at least monsters

Komodo Dragon was also a path eater. That's an 18 x 18 paver.

Empress Wu is more than waist high now. I'm short, but she's still a monster. I forgot to get a picture of Night Before Christmas, which is 32 inches high and 4 ft. wide. Dancing Queen, right next to it, is a couple inches taller, but not as wide.

Dud year Silver Lode. It only had two leaves when I Bought it from a child hosta grower for a buck. It did nothing first two years so I moved it. Now it has 4 leaves. I have hop for it yet!

Madplanter, what happened to your Fall group that you used bleach?

,Lindalana, I suspected the stunting was some kind of root or crown rot. Even if it wasn't, a 5 to 10% bleach solution wasn't going to hurt them.

It is interesting how healthy SDM looks right next to them. I have a problem area similar, thinking what I have is area of more water collection in certain lower spots. Am wondering if replanting it on just a tad higher level solves root rot.

I don't know what could be the problem. They're on the upper part of a slope, so it's not drainage. We did have a very cold winter and a lot of snow. It was interesting that the only plants that had trouble were the 3 falls hostas and Crocodile Socks. CS had an excuse. It was moved last year and somehow sank over winter. It was at least three inches too deep, and by the time I gave up and started digging it never recovered. Whatever it is, the whole family suffered.

And 6 year old Patriot has been an under-performer.

Inniswood has really shown its stuff this year. It’s an oldie but goodie. I think Hallson’s still has some for sale.
