can we define how old it is .... as an old work horse been there forever ...

is there any chance she is so current on hosta.. that she bought a world cup ???? ..its only been around since 2006

and.. most importantly.. i wouldnt call that cupped ... nor does it look like WC in the library ...

why not plain old undulata erromena?

It’s been there forever, I believe. She’s been in the neighborhood longer than me, 30+ years and I bet it’s at least that old. I will let her know undulata erromena, she will be thrilled!:-) Is there a place in the library where it says the year a hosta was created? Thanks!

Hit "Myhostas.netDatabase" at top of page in Hosta Library (after finding the hosta you are looking for). So for Undulata Erromena: 1987.

but note.. that might only be the registration date... its a clue.. its not definitive ...

e.g. undulata.. from which the green erromeana sprang ... dates bate to at least 1930 ... and i bet peeps have been cutting the green out of it.. for at least that long ...

here's the key ... back when i was a kid ... there in the 19602 and 70s ... there was the white edged one ... the white centered one. and the green one.. and they were the undulata clan ... there was also the august lily.. with 6 inch white fragrant flowers .. [plantaginea] ..... and that was about it for hosta ... they were everywhere.. because you could kill them.. they needed nothing.. what i call.. the old workhorses ...

so when someone says.. oh.. its been there.. 30.. 40.. 50 years ... then its probably one of these ..

UNLESS someone was a plant collector.. then other things are possible ... but not probable.... because there just wasnt a market for them ...

then in the 70s.. pauline banyai started selling them in her driveway in metro detroit ... and her and alex sommers and mildred seaver.. started a round robin letter writing.. and swapping plants.. and started a journal.. and the hosta market evolved ... and then along came hostaholics ... lol ..

Possibly 'Sun Power'?

Ken, I actually thought you were pulling my leg with thar name.... now I understand better. When I was a kid, I remember seeing I believe, lancifolias everywhere. When I started to buy them because I have a very shady yard, it openEd a whole new hosta world and now I am an addict as well, especially since I found the Library and especially the forum. Very interesting history. And Steve, I thought perhaps Sun Power too, but now based on Ken’ information, I will need a bit more information from my neighbor.

The hosta is growing in a good amount of southern light in the morning. It does get shade in the afternoon. It’s not blooming yet so I cannot comment on that Yet. My friend believes she planted it so it’s not as old as I thought it might be.

Did she buy it or was it gifted to her as a division. from someone’s garden?

if the history changes.. then my suggestion probably changes ...

agree with embo... a pic of the whole plant would help

but i suspect.. its not what we could call a 10 foot plant... one easily named at 10 feet ... and though we all like guessing.. definitively naming it.. will probably be impossible ...

though sometimes.. if you get flower pix .. the same plant blooms everywhere.. within a few days.. and that may lead us somewhere ...

Here are some shots of the hosta. I was in luck, it is blooming. Flowers are pale lavender and white striped.

It does sit in a somewhat raised bed.

Do these photos help. I think it could be sun power based on what I read in the database.

Sun Power was also the first one that I thought of. Apparently, it does pass the 10-foot rule. Nice one!
