What's the door to the left in the exterior shot?

The door to the left is an entrance into a small area I’ve made into a mudroom that’s off our galley kitchen. Eventually it will be closed in a relocated further away when we remodel the storage area off the carport into a proper mudroom/laundry room.

If you do an out swing the storm door will have to be removed, right? (Can the entry door take the heat?)

If you removed the storm door and left the main door as an inside swing, I think you’d be able to back up for folks to enter the house without rubbing bellies.

Take off the storm door for a couple weeks and see how you like it. If you’re still uncomfortable, get an outswing door.

I wouldn't do it if I lived in an area where snow or ice might block the door from opening.

I wouldn't want to see the hinges on the outside.

This was helpful! No snow or ice to worry about, we’re in Texas so it’s rare and the porch is enough to keep it at bay (plus in an emergency we have 4 other exterior doors).

I love the idea of removing the storm door, I hadn’t thought of it but that is definitely part of the problem and an easy thing to try! We’ll be replacing the door either way with one that has a bigger window so I wasn’t planning on keeping the storm door anyway.

You don't have a building code that dictates this?

We installed Provia Heritage fiberglass doors in our condo complex. They have performed very well and you might want to consider one for your house. The Provia website shows outswing thresholds so this (or other) Provia door may be available that way.

As for code, all I can tell so far is that hurricane impacted areas can have out swing requirements and heavy snow impacted areas can have in swing requirements, of which I am neither.
