The living tissue that carries water and nutrients to the rest of the tree from the roots, and food from the leaves down to the roots, is about 1/3 gone. The cracks will be susceptible to bugs and diseases, although it looks like the tree did a pretty good job of forming a scar. Who knows if it will die or not. It's been severely injured. I would put some deer fencing around it next fall. It's always going to have that scar. Only you can decide whether to leave it or tear it out and replace it with a new one, which you should then try to protect. I feel your pain. Deer are wreaking havoc with many of my trees too.

I really don't know what to do. It hasn't shown any signs of dying, so pulling it out just bc of the scar doesn't seem right. I already put some metal chicken wire fencing around it, so the deer wont be able to get to it again. Can it flourish with so much of the bark gone?

That's what I'd do Svengoli. If it ain't broke yet, don't fix it. Trees can overcome amazing damage. And sometimes one tiny thing roller coasts into death. One never knows.

Yep, tree lived. Not growing too fast, but 100% alive and flowering in the spring.
