There can be issues. Google replant disease to learn about it

Thx for reply. Google search string "replant disease" was just what I needed.

I have done it numerous times before with usually with good success. However I have one spot that I planted a Ginger Gold apple (died after 2 years). I then planted a pear there and it died a year later. Next I tried a cherry and it died 2 years later. The site has great soil, drains well so no problem underground that I can find. Too costly to keep trying.

When I was a boy we had a home orchard with same issue. We had an area with numerous apple trees yet one tree kept dying. We planted in the same spot 3 times and gave up as all were short lived. Others around that site did just fine.

Replant issues are typically restricted to established orchards and far less common with home fruit production. And it is not a disease but most likely the result of a depletion of soil nutrients from many years of tree growth. And depending on when the previous tree died, there could also be a build up with the soil biology that takes care of digesting the underground portions of dead plants that can slow establishment of new plants.

Other than dealing with whatever remaining roots might be present - a concern with planting any tree in the same spot previously occupied by another tree - I would not hesitate to replant in the same spot or as close to it as I could manage.

Replant ssues are almost always overstated :-)
