I would probably do a taupe-y grey for both the roof and trim ... I think that red brick and grey look really terrific together.

Thank you for your quick response and kind words. I agree with you but wanted to something a little more modern, maybe slate gray? Plus the double wood front door is deeply inset into the front porch. Would you think to paint it lighter shade?

I would first choose your roof since that will be a new fixed element that you can't change for a long time. The roof color then drives the trim color. Grays can have green, blue and purple undertones. Green undertones would complement the red brick better.

Love the house! You could do a tin roof.

Love the idea of gray with your brick--for both trim and roof. A lighter shade near the entry if possible. To me, the greatest need is for a whole new landscape plan. You have some overgrown shrubs near the house, and a large expanse of uninterrupted grass that doesn't draw you to the entry. You may need a landscape professional to develop a plan for you--I think the expense would be well worth it.

Absolutely true about the landscaping. I am not residing at this property yet. I was wanting to re-roof and paint prior to totally reworking the landscaping...and I can't hardly wait. That's my forte!!

The lighter the roof, the less heat it will absorb.

Amber and sand colored shingles will look good with the brick.
This way the house will not look too cold once the trim is painted black/white/grey.

I am partial to a color called weathered wood, it goes with both greys and brown. I would probably go with a charcoal grey trim, black might be to harsh but you could add some wider trim around your windows to give them more balance and add some shutters. If you really wanted to spend some money, you have a blank canvas that you give the front a whole new craftsmanship style.

If it were just about color i would stain the brick grey. It would look great with the reddish brown ( wood?) trim.

If you want to go modern, I would seriously consider a metal roof as MintyGreen suggested. An ashphalt shingle roof will not change the current ranch character of the home, but I do think that if you're going to stay with ranch, changing the roof to dark grey and painting the house a light grey would freshen things up.

Have you looked at any of the Atomic Ranch magazines for ideas? They feature some great mid century modern updating ideas without destroying the integrity of the original design. Might be worth a look. Good luck!

White trim also looks good with red brick. A Google search brought up a lot of nice examples.

Or, leave everything as is and lighten up the look by creating an entra nce courtyard with aluminum frames with white frosted panels. Plant grasses in front, and use gravel and stepping stones to the front door. Think modern and japanese. ( like shoji screens - only just 1 panel in modern style)

I think some new landscaping would help too. Adding colour with trees, bushes and flowers will brighten the house and make it feel more homey and inviting.

I have a 1966 ranch that has terra cotta coloured brick and I just had to choose a new roof colour. The original colour was brownish and I never cared for it. I couldn't figure our why until I started looking at shingles. Brown is the wrong color for my house!

Your brick is just a tad darker than mine and I think a different color roof would make a world of difference with your house.

I would paint the trim the colour of your mortar and add a bright, fun color (door and accents) to brighten up things.

Thank you. I am in north Texas. It was 70* on Monday. :) Today is in the 30's dropping into the 20's with a low of 19*. :( Our whole winter has been like this. Hate it!

Goodness!! I just stumbled across my old post and And yes I bought the house and it's been a constant progression! New grey roof and dark chocolate/grey trim (black fox SW). All new landscaping and added a patio with pergola and fireplace in the back. I'm so thankful for this post and all the input I received!

Here's a teaser...it's before I built the fireplace. I'll try to take and add more photo's tomorrow, granted it's winter so my landscapining looks bare.
