I agree with you on turning the mirror. I am not sure if it it the right frame? Love the blue and crystal lamps. I like the curtain all the way across.

May we see that big piece of art? Is that one he wants to keep? Have you considered fiber shades for the windows? How about putting the headboard where the smaller picture is and using wall hung corded lamps on either side wall with that big art 5" above the headboard? Not sure I care for the rug and it looks to be a tight fit in the space. It is very traditional and you can get a more contemporary one. You might appreciate the washable ones at Ruggable. I just put this one in a kids area in our vacation rental cabin. They have lots of abstract blue ones.

Does your son need access to open and close curtains? Do the new curtains need to be blackout or are there shades under there? Most any colorway will work,what does he like? Are you certain this is the best layout for the room?

It would be pretty easy to do bedding in a mid-denim shade, a couple of romans from etsy, and a few red red accents. Kinda like below,just not so "floral and fluffed". Also,I have used faux romans with roller blinds underneath a time or two when budget is a concern.
