What about Meyer lemons?

When I first got into citrus, the “Guru‘s told the masses including me that’s the lemon to grow, well now a few years later I grow 2 besides a couple others. For information the Meyers going to stay.

I catch a lot of fish being on the lake and to me sauté fish should not taste like stronger lemon. My wife lemon squares made with Meyers taste better than the Keylime pie in Key West.

We all like what we like. To me Meyers have an off taste. Can’t quite put my finger on it Maybe on fish it’s fine. Not so good for an ade drink as true lemon to me.

I don’t want to be a lemon connoisseur , what I grow is good enough, in mandarins it’s a different story, got to have the finest, which I already have grafted and growing, all free In exchange, that’s what keep me going.

Grow two Meyers, one midget with 20 on it , the other just been repotted and heavy pruned. It will be good next season, new growth up the ying yang.

I feel Meyers is often way over hyped, though it does have things going for it for some growers. I also think that it should not be recommended for most container growers, due to its finicky nature. I have an in ground Meyers on the 8b/9a line in Louisiana, and spend more effort caring for it than my other 9 in ground citrus trees combined, mostly trying to make sure it has enough Nitrogen.

For me the benefits out weigh the disadvantages, with it being slightly more cold hardy than other lemons as a major factor in a location that is already marginal for in ground Meyers. Its ability to hold fruit on the tree for long periods as well as its wide harvest season are a couple of other big advantages for me as a home grower as it allows me to go out and pick what I need when I need it for much of the year, unlike for example my Satsumas which only stay good on the tree for maybe 4-6 weeks at most.

Ike, I don’t have any problems with mine. If they need more fertilizer I gif them more, anything else, no,no! What so crazy about Meyers, all of a sudden nobody likes them, just a bunch of smoke. If I ever need a better one, my two Santa Teresa will be in great shape, they carry fruit already.

32-0-4 lauwn feed works wonders for extra nitrogen.

Steve, that fertilizer is mainly Urea, which is a long term fertilizer, which means if you are not careful with your watering, you could easily burn roots.

Smart watering is a requirement with me, that’s what make container culture more difficult, than inground . Container gardening is a pita,to say the least But I am doing it happily.

Bklyn, lemons are just like figs, hundreds of them, it’s all about your tastebuds. What do you do mainly with them? Me, not much. Cooking? Limes. Margaritas in the summer? Limes. Lemonade? For kids.

I love Meyer lemon because they have a lot of juice but I prefer other lemons for their zest. Right now, I have three meyer lemon but if one is to die, I will replace it with some true lemon like a villafranca or an eureka (I will go with whichever is the most productive). However, I do feel that meyer lemon a place in my collection but maybe not three. One is enough.

I personally am not a fan of Meyer, and prefer regular lemons like Lisbon, but it may be a matter of personal taste preference. In taste tests, more people prefer Meyer to regular lemons. Meyer is sweeter and juicier, but to me the flavor is more bland and not as lemony or aromatic. Meyer can also develop an off flavor if left on the tree too long.

Socalnolympia, is correct. Pick them when they are yellow. If you wait until they are dark yellow or Orange/yellow, they have a strange flavor. I have two dwarf trees, I love making lemonade with them. I do add one Eureka for 2 or 3 Meyer lemons in the lemonade.
