Do you want to contain the area in the corner defined by the column? I'd probably be looking at a modular storage system. The Eket series from Ikea has stackable and wall-hung storage. You could set up you wall storage so that your table could tuck against the wall under wall-hung units when not in use and pulled out when you were using it.

we think best use is to focus table top on right side, then use left side for storage. I'm debating on cube storage, bookcases, or wall shelves as best option. we will extend counter top the whole length of right side. the column makes it tough to design. and I'm not sure if modular storage unit or adjustable wall mounted shelving would be better on left
