White stuff on stems

My abutilon somehow ended up with several broken branches, so I figured I'd put them in water and see if they would root. I initially mixed some rooting hormone in the water. The stems developed this white stuff...it wiped off easily at first, but now it is attached,,,,,it doesn't seem to be hurting, as one of the cuttings has a couple of roots , I'm just curious as to what it is....I vaguely remember some cuttings doing this in the past, but, I don't remember what kind of plants they were, or if they rooted or not.

Thank you in advance :)!!!
