Question for Canna Lovers

Even though I treat them for those caterpillars and the disease that they get on their leaves, this time of year they start looking pretty ratty. (Cannas.) I just got through cutting all the ones that are pretty much gone down to the ground and the others I've cut off all bad looking leaves and spent flower stalks. I removed a lot of dead stuff that had piled up at soil level, hopefully now the air has movement space around there. Do you have the same problems or am I just not doing things right? After the growing season I always prune all dead stuff back to the ground and in the Spring it all comes back fresh and healthy looking and then blooms beautifully so is this just something I just have to get used to?
