A gray color scheme isn't necessarily more modern. Gray has been a trend for the last 10+ years and it is slowly, but surely fading away.

We were house hunting recently and the worst homes I saw were those that had the main elements done in the 1990s tan/beige, but they tried to update by painting the walls gray and adding some gray or marble-look tile somewhere.

It just didn't work.

Sure you can use beige and gray together. They are both neutrals and occur together in nature. Neutrals don't go in or out of style. What does go out is when people overdose a room in a neutral. I would go with a warm gray and pull in a color in accessories. The paint store can steer you to the warm grays. It's only paint, if you don't like it you can always repaint.

If you can post some photos we’ll be able to give better advice. You can’t ignore existing undertones in your hard surfaces and furnishings. Fabrics can help tie things together but sometimes beige is the correct neutral for a space it just needs freshen up to a lighter one.

BM Feather Down has a hint of gray and about as griege (leans more beige) as my finishes will allow.
