Help with drapes

Redoing my living room after painting and almost complete (Manchester Tan). Now need drapes and possibly new blinds. Also added an old photo of living room since I’m unable to put sofas back in place just yet. Can I add something like the pattered in below photo?

What pattern are you referring to?

I'g get nice woven wood shades with a privacy liner, or beautiful HD Silhouette shades and FORGET curtains. They're half hidden by very CASUAL sofas. Go with your flow : )

They are casual for now..not keeping the sofa for long but need to work in the current situation. Would it look ok to have wood in living room and white blinds in kitchen?

IMO to decorate for what you don’t want is ludicrous why not just wail until you get the new stuff.

You have beautiful window trim. Almost a shame to hide it with blinds or curtains. If I were you, I'd decide on the window solution last, once the new furniture is in. I'd call one or two of those blind companies for a free in-house consultation and explore my options that way. Window treatments can get expensive, especially anything custom but they can often make the room.

Wow I wish I had the opportunity to do everything I wanted when I wanted to but for now the only update I can do right now is paint.

Ikea has affordable white curtins that i think would look good here, open, so to show off the trim.

    Not a Pro.

I like the patterned curtains in the last picture you posted. I think they will go well with your area rug and sofa. I think that the throw pillows on your sofa, wall art, etc. accessories around the room should all be put aside.

Buy a pair of the patterned curtains and see if they work in the room. Post a picture. If they do. Bring in wall decor, pillows and accessories, back into the room , one at a time and see what works, and what does not.

Do not let a little advice stop you from trying to have fun with this room.

Please post as you go along and try things out.

Colleen -- I think the curtains you posted will look nice with your furniture but they might restrict you when you get ready to replace your upholstered pieces. If it was my house I'd either get an inexpensive version of the patterned curtains you like, or go with a solid, lined, cotton/linen/silk curtain in a similar shade as your new paint. Pottery Barn has some decent quality classic panels -- watch for sales. I'd leave the window shades as is for now as long as they're in decent condition. The bottom-up shades are great for privacy and replacing them won't be cheap. Have fun decorating your lovely living room.

I totally understand not being able to do everything at once (my reality as well). I do think however that you need a plan for the whole room that you can implement as time and budget allow. Deciding on things piece meal risks ending up with a room that isn't cohesive. Is there anything wrong with the current blinds that is making you need to change them now?

Fantastic and helpful advise here so thank you all! I will keep the up down shades as they do seem to appear to blend well with the paint. I will finish painting next weekend and will put the couch back and see how it all looks. It’s always about $$ for me so the small changes I make, hopefully make a big impact. Thanks everyone! I’ll keep you posted:)

Post as you go along :-)

So what do y’all think? I’m hearing I can go without panels and stick with just blinds. If I do that I assume it would be best to do the wood woven shades? Thoughts? Added a picture I’m liking due to the clean fresh look of nothing on the windows but white shutters.

Leave them bare for the summer and see how that works for you.

So I will need to add pictures to the walls later too then, correct? Wait it all out? I will update pillows on sofa and work on a new table and mirror for the opposite wall. I need a better photo rather than the only one I can find on my phone but this could use an update, agreed?

I’ve decided to hold onto the blinds. Will wait on panels to see how it all grows on me while trying to do updates that will add warmth to this room.

I think you have warmth in your room.

I took down my curtains when I painted and never put them back up. I still have blinds, and for now the bare look feels right.

There is no harm in going slowly with your changes and it will come together for you.

Thanks CINDY! I’m thinking the same for now. I’m looking into updating some pieces in the room to pull in some new. The ottoman, and console table need an update ASAP.

Your room is beautiful! I am trying to decide on window treatments in our family room which reminds me a bit of yours. My drapes were blocking airflow from our AC vents so I took them down and am getting used to the look! You could go either way here; looks like you have enough room for drapery panels if you want them. My only comment is that I would want the window treatments to correspond with your adjoining room, which I can see has a valance and blinds. Since the rooms are open to each other and on the same wall, they should be similar in style.

JJam, good point!! So I’d also be willing to redo my kitchen treatments since they have been with me for 15 years. Would love to refresh both rooms to reflect a more flowing look from one room to another!

Seeing your latest pictures of the room, I have to say your blinds look great with your newly painted walls. If this was happenstance, you're lucky! Window treatments can get so expensive. You've really no need to replace your blinds. Your room already has warmth so I'm not sure what you're looking to achieve exactly. If it's just a change because your eye has tired of what's been there for X years, one trick is to bare all surfaces to see the space with new eyes. Perhaps you experienced a bit of that when you painted the room. You shop your home and add things a bit at a time.

If it were my space, I'd remove the valance in the kitchen, widen the space between the two living room prints just a smidge and get more colourful throw pillows for the sofa. I'd probably leave the ottoman bare and figure out the console's purpose. In my world, it can't simply be to "fill the wall". I hate dusting and if something is potentially blocking my path, it's there for a functional reason first. :)

So helpful!! Ok so the kitchen treatments come down is part of the next change . I need to paint the kitchen to now tie into living room. With that said, I’d love to change the balances as they seem so dated to me. No idea what could work so I’ll take suggestions on that also! The neck in kitchen has wear and tear so I added throw pillows but can see how it looks bare.

No need for a valance in the kitchen. Just the blind works. The kitchen bench? You can always recover it if need be.

    I can’t seem to go without a
valance or perhaps woven blinds might make a good change. So many decisions.

Tartanmeup, do you think these pillows can work? Pulled in navy blue from the rug.

For the living room or the bench in your kitchen?

Where they are...on the couch in living room

Hard to trust the colours on my screen. Is your couch olive? Navy wouldn't be my first choice to pair with olive but they're not horrid together. My worry is the style of these pillows doesn't sing with what you currently have. Can you share a close up of your rug?

I think I'd be tempted by multi-coloured pillows for your living room sofa. Something that introduces other accent colours. But that's me. I love colour.

    Close up of rug.

Thanks, Colleen. See, on my screen, the dark colour looks black. Those leaves are navy? The tiny blue I spot is a French blue, much lighter than navy. I see some flowers outlined in rust or red as well? That would be a lovely accent colour to bring up in the room.

Ok I see that now. Returning them. Where did you see the ones you posted.? Love the last one?

I found this batch on Wayfair.ca by choosing both New Traditional and French Country styles. The inspo pics you shared on your other thread reminded me of a layered French Country look. Perhaps these will strike your fancy?

They are lovely but what I have found is anything with a strong white background doesn’t works I need something beige cream background.

First batch of pillows is from Houzz. You should be able to click on the link below each for more info. I agree with you on the white. Beige or cream is best in your space. I don't see any white in the second batch I shared but I didn't read each description. Again, colours on a screen can't be trusted so you and I are probably not seeing the same colours.

Don't forget to check Etsy for pillows and pillow covers.

That last one works but then I have no idea how to group them with other pillows and color. :(

Actually it’s the ivory green one I like.
