Looks as if there are two and far enough apart that if you want to they could be seperated, It will take at least 3 years before they will be a nice size clump . Personally I would leave them together but I like larger clumps

Are you sure there are no slugs or cutworms??? The cutworms can do awful damage. I had several affected by both culprits this year. Maybe it’s my garden ,but I have found, if I plant them (hosta) they (the culprit) will come. I would agree with almosthooked and arcy_gw, they are more vulnerable the smaller they are. I wouldn’t separate them.
