Living room needs update

Hi I want to update my living room. Here’s what is giving me trouble:

-tv is stuck in corner due to wires

-air conditioner unit is awkward but cant be moved

-lack of storage

Other facts:

-vaulted ceiling

-same couches for 12 years

-same color wall for 12 years (but I like it)

-never really knew what to do with window treatments

-never really knew what to do with large wall opposite window

-I’m a crocheter and do lots of my projects here thus the mess of yarn and stuff

-this is the only living room area in house nowhere else to put tv

I also need to keep my exercise bike here as I have nowhere else to put it.

Please excuse the mess lol.

Armoire/dresser type piece below the AC to hold all your projects. Large art over the sofa opposite the window. Drapery panels need to be fuller. You need lamps for a warmer, cozier feel.

I was looking at entertainment units with shelves etc but the darn ac would always get in the way of those too whenever I measured. I had asked when it was installed to be put elsewhere but apparently that was the only place that would work.

    Thanks for the ideas.

The tv isn't stuck in the corner due to wires. The wires can be run around the floor molding.

Try moving individual pieces around. Can the bike go in the air conditioning corner? Or on the other side of the sofa (you could watch TV while you pedal). Pull the coffee table closer to the sofa. I'd replace the two wood pieces with larger pieces with storage -- a long, low cabinet/dresser on the air conditioning wall, and a dresser/small armoire to replace the bookcase. A side table (or two) with drawers would help, too. Baskets make wonderful, affordable storage for craft supplies. Once you have everything in place, start looking around for a rug and artwork.

I'm a big fan of buying used furniture. Good upholstered pieces are harder to find used, but there are a lot of tables, cabinets and decorative items in resale shops, estate sales and antiques stores at affordable prices. Ikea is also a good option. Have fun redecorating your room.

Painting your room off white would make the air conditioner less obvious, as well as brighten the room. We were forced to do that because the dimwit builder got both our bay windows off center. Dark walls accentuate problems.

Are you in the market for new seating? A 3-seat sofa and two armchairs are about the most flexible seating you can have. Never let a simple installation issue keep the TV in the wrong spot. It is not that expensive to have your focal point in the right place. I think new paint that minimizes the AC unit would be wise. I used to crochet, but it was always confined to a basket or tote. A storage coffee table could be a hiding place of extra yarn and supplies.

Thanks everyone. I like the idea of painting it lighter to make the ac less noticeable. Also the hiding the wires thing, wasn’t sure if it was possible before, don’t know why lol.

i Actually would love new sofas. I’ve been looking around but haven’t found anything I like yet. I’ve been reluctant too because my cat is a scratcher of everything.

I love the ideas so far thanks everyone.

Oh and reason the coffee table is so far out is cause current sofas are recliners.

If you continue to use reclining seating, switch from a coffee table to "C" tables. They can sit beside like an end table, extend over the arm (as shown) or come in front to use as a snack/laptop table.

I played around with an app. Would this look too crazy? The wall colours I mean . Lol. I’ll try and take better screenshots tomorrow.

There wasnt much choice of furniture in the free version but for an entertainment hutch I’d like something different from this. I was thinking more like this: https://www.wayfair.ca/furniture/pdp/one-allium-way-tavant-entertainment-centre-for-tvs-up-to-70-onaw1799.html

it would not hit the air conditioner but it is quite big. I’m not sure if it would overpower the room. i would still need some sort of armoire for extra storage, most likely underneath the ac.

I would switch the sofa and the love seat so that the sofa is facing tv center and love seat is facing window.

I think your space is too small to need an accent wall. If you're crazy about the teal then paint the entire room that color. You AC unit will stand out though. Fabrics and textiles are where you go to determine the best color, so keep shopping for new seating and then it will fall into place. Take your time so you don't make serious mistakes you regret.

Paint walls to disguise AC. You can get plastic covers that hide cords if need to run TV wires along baseboards. You could center tv where the teal console is. The sofa could face it and the teal console could be a sofa table behind it if sofa seems to float in the middle of the room. You could get a light weight fabric folding screen to hide bike in a corner if not used daily. Cabinet or shelves under AC could hold yarn projects. They could be decorative baskets. If you put sofa on the wall with AC, you would not have to look at it so much. Experiment on paper with ways to rotate the furniture arrangement. Consider painting your shelves and getting matching bins or baskets to organize things.
