I was leaning to fiberglass, but my contractor suggested that with the heat on our front door, that fiberglass would still have some issues with changes in temperature.

If you are going to stick with steel, paint it instead (you can't accomplish a passable wood look with a steel door). Going with the same green in your trim would be a nice cohesive look.

A steel door will absorb a lot of heat, too!
Have you considered adding a covered portico which may help block the direct sun from the door?
You could also add a tree to the lawn to help block the sun. Since it is summer now, you have a good idea where the sun is in the afternoon.

I agree, tho you may need to replace the door at this point, not only would a portico help the heat but it would GREATLY improve the character and curb appeal. This is a major job i know but here is an idea.

Thanks everyone! While I've always loved the idea of a portico, we actually have to prioritize the light we get through the door. Our family room and kitchen (the rooms we live in) are in the back of the house and VERY dark. We've installed interior transom windows in the rooms facing east, installed skylites, etc. Not much has helped. We plan to install another 3/4 glass door and keep sidelites. We desperately need the light that comes through the door and lights our hallway and part of the back of the house, so unfortunately blocking the sun to lower the temp on the door isn't an option for us.

I have a pre stained mahagony color fiberglass door. It is ten years old and last year after years exposed to southern exposure sunlight it looked rather red not brown. I restained it myself with General finishes gel stain. If you go lighter you might not have to ever redo it but it was quite easy to DIY it I thought.
