Help with entry door

last modified: 7 years ago

Hi. I need help with my entry door for a colonial style home in the Northeast. We face South and the front gets very hot in the sun. Our current wood door painted white has split and sticks terribly in the summer, this was even before we installed a storm door, which protects the split front door but also creates more heat between the doors. We are planning to replace with a steel door to avoid the problems that occur with the fluctuation in the temperatures. My problem is I'd really like to have a wood look to the door and sidelites. Can I realistically stain a steel door so that it would look like wood and not an imitation? How? I want a lighter wood look so it goes with the color scheme better and doesn't absorb too much heat. And if not, what color would you suggest for the front entry, keeping in mind I don't want too dark for heat purposes? Stick with white or change?

Thanks in advance for your input!
