What's this worm? - Peach tree

I need help identifying this unwelcome visitor to my peaches. More importantly, how can I prevent them from being a problem in future years? This is about as big as I've ever seen one of these things get.
It seems anything that I have ever tried to prevent worms has not worked. Home grower...2 trees...Early Red Haven and Elberta.
