Unless the room is very large, it feels to me like it will be filled with a lot of heavy pieces and in particular, enough case goods that it might look like an Ethan Allen showroom. I wonder if you couldn’t use lighter, reflective (no more wood, no more case goods) pieces. Perhaps something metallic and reflective, like brass- or copper- trimmed mirrored tables?

Thanks for chiming in! I do already have nickel and black finishes on the existing sconces over the desk, so I’ve been hesitant to add a third metal with brass or copper. The rest of the apartment has a mix of nickel and brass. I hear what you’re saying about too many cased goods - it’s a city apartment and while it’s a good size room, it’s not enormous. It’s approximately 11’x 17’. That said, because it’s a city apartment, I was hoping to squeeze some more storage into the nightstands and otherwise keep everything light and bright (white walls, pale floors, keep white bedding on the linen colored bed, etc.).

I would plan on lamps, NOT more sconces since you already have two in the space. Do you need storage in the nightstands (as in the two you like) as well as a dresser? Could you go a bit leggier and more open as above? & a basic floorplan of the room would help.

Here’s a floorplan. The long wall on the bottom is about 16.5’ and the window wall is about 11.5’. I may be able to live without the extra storage and agree that something leggier would be a better look, but as mentioned above, this is an apartment and every bit of storage counts. I guess that’s why I likes the examples in my initial post below-they provided storage and looked like interesting pieces as opposed to another piece from “an Ethan Allen showroom” as JPP said my room may look like above. Speaking of Ethan Allen, they did have one open option I liked (see below).

The reason for more sconces is that this room doesn’t have any overhead lights (and cannot have any installed because of the concrete ceiling) and those will be the primary light source and I’m trying to keep my tabletops clear (which is a challenge based on the picture of my desk).

Then maybe not mirror, but glass or metallic? Just no more wood.

PS seeing your floor plan, I wonder whether the desk could go in front if the window?

Also, if you want to avoid over-sconce-ing (it’s a word, in my dictionary anyway) but want yo keep the nightstand clear, consider swing-arm wall-mounted lamps.

JJP - I would consider a glass or metallic other than wood. I do need to at least one drawer to keep the things I use daily at nighttime. I just want the room to feel serene and relaxing and not move into the glam category. I’m also replacing the dresser, so I have flexibility there (such as doing a high gloss white instead of wood). Also open to swing arm lamps as long as they provide enough light to light the room. Do you have any suggestions of pieces to look at?

Desk fits nicely where it is and I have a large mirror on the wall behind it (desk doubles as my vanity - city living!). There’s also a HVAC unit in front of the window that needs to be accessed regularly and can’t be behind furniture that can’t be moved easily.

Remind me what’s troubling you about the existing nightstands? They seem fine to me. I’d maybe put a mirrored tray atop the one furthest from the window, a touch of glass, and off you go. (Glass but not glam = things like bubble glass, anything reflective.)

It’s hard to tell from the picture, but they’re over 10 years old and the nightstand and dresser are completely worn on the tops (especially on my husband’s side of the bed!). I’m also tired of the espresso brown look so I want to try to rehab them. We never bought a proper bed and the headboard it too short, so it’s time to get the bedroom I’ve always wanted!
