About cameras: do you use your RX as a point and shoot mostly or you have to choose different settings while taking pics in different lights? I still can't afford even the oldest RX (which is going to be discontinued by Best Buy, so maybe maybe they'll lower the price lol). I got my cheapy Sony yesterday and it's horrible. What you get is huge blurry pics with distorted colors, on practically all of them. Doesn't matter, sun, bright shade or what, purples, oranges, yellows, pinks especially. I am very disappointed...

Mens Wear looks very well budded. Christopher Hitchens, Chateau Belair. Be There Now, and Jelly Rolll Morton are all beautiful Hansons. Daniel Howard Norris is one I admired a lot when I saw it in person in Kingsport. All of My Love to You is gorgeous on rebloom. I wish mine would rebloom. I think it only has rebloomed one time before.

I wish some rain would come to us. We had a good one about a week ago, but it is dry as a bone now and the weather forecast says there is no hope in sight for many days. It's amazing what rain can do to the quality of the blooms.

Nat, you may have to adjust the exposure in your picture editing. You can also adjust picture sharpness. I use only the automatic settings on my camera, but do set the manual setting to a lower exposure. For example, on this picture, I used the program setting (which is set to a lower exposure) because it is too bright out even when a cloud passes. Full-sun pics can be difficult with many colors. If you take pics in low light (early morning), you will get grainy pics. There is often a hotline you can call for advice on settings. I remember actually getting a person a few years ago. Also, I would think you could take the camera back within a few days of purchase.

Look up your camera online and see what advice is given.

Thanks for the example, looks pretty good! I won't even pretend to understand all those photography terms so with normal exp would be too light? Lowered exposure was the first thing I tried, nope, just darker. White balance set on cloudy in Program mode seems to help but still not a correct color. I am willing to make a few adjustments for some flowers, but to take diff setting numerous pics of every flower is too much, I just want a point and shoot. Too bad my (very) old camera can not last and last..

I only have one lady I know who is a professional photographer, she told me she knew nothing about P&S, so they came last year or 2 years ago to take pics of flowers (after noon lol) anyway, granted I only saw one pic but it wasn't a correct color. It was Kingdom Without End and it looked almost red..

Sorry about all this photography OT, I just had no idea how difficult it is to find a camera for backyard flowers pic. Online they mostly talk about building pics, portraits etc. I think I am going to have to return mine after all.

Nat, the normal exposure on your automatic setting should work well. If the colors are incorrect, it is usually a matter of lighting. Low light distorts colors, but too much light can also distort. For example, purples taken very early tend to have a blue cast, but pictures taken in too bright light produce mainly the red tones in the purple. It can be hard to find the right time. Nancy has suggested taking around 10 a.m. I find that works well. However, the above was taken in early afternoon.

Unfortunately, many pictures on picture sites have distorted colors. Yes, the color changes somewhat during the day, but not as much as the distorted pictures present. Wrong colors and super saturation are the most typical distortions on these sites.

So I'm scrolling along thinking how nice they all are when out jumps Daniel Howard Norris. The colors are so ultra vivid. Any comments on it?.........Maryl

Maryl, DHN is consistently good. It's a Norris intro, probably one of his best. It started midseason here, but Nancy says it is a later one for her. Hot afternoon sun will obviously have an effect with almost any color so dark.

If I need to pick favorites, I will narrow it down to Men's Wear and Jelly Roll Morton, though there are several others I really like as well.

Thanks Mantis for the information on DHN. It's now on my list. Mary's Baby comes from Mr. Norris and is remarkably sunfast/colorfast in our extreme summer heat given how late it blooms. So there's hope for DHN too.......Maryl

I like Men’s Wear color and the fact that it blooms a long time is a plus! I have always like the ”presence” of Daniel Harris Norton with its coloration and also good to know it is consistent-it is so pretty.

By the way, as a former English teacher, I am well aware that Mens Wear should have an apostrophe, but it is registered without. For a while, Spartacus Adorned was registered as Sparticus Adorned.

Hahaha Mantis!!! As a former English major, things like that bother me! However, in my comment, my phone’s autocorrect changed it to correct usage! I do usually check and proofread my responses but sometimes in too much of a hurry to do so! I wonder who was responsible for the reformed Spartacus name.

Katherine Marin looks very similar to Science Of Mind (also a Rice intro) which I grow here but it has less edge ruffling. Jelly Roll Morton reminds me a lot of Allegheny Skyline (also a Hanson) but parentage is very different. Do you grow both? Comparison as to stats?

The Spartacus Adorned name got changed after the AHS database crashed and many of the entries had to be re-entered. The spelling of Frozen Margarita was also corrected at that time. As I understand it, files with apostrophes can no longer be entered in new registrations.

Very interesting about the registration.

While I can see some resemblance in the eyezones, Allegheny Skyline is more pinkish here, while Jelly Roll Morton is a strong rose, almost red. JRM is more sunfast, a larger bloom, more contrast betwen base and eye, bigger and taller plant. Looks much different in the garden. AS comes across as more delicate, even pastel, with a more patterned eyezone. JRM is bold, with the base color dominating, but strong contrasts in flower.

I do not grow Science of Mind. Katherine is a vivid color in the garden. This year, it has instant rebloom, but bud count is modest.

Thanks, Mantis! I agree about 10am, I too think it's the best time, and that's when I was taking pics yesterday with a new camera - 99% wrong color. It's too frustrating.

Katherine Marin looks very interesting. I wish the cameras could capture the subtleties. I also like Be Here Now, such a nice shade of yellow.
