Ceiling height transitions

I am remodeling a mid century ranch home that transitions from 18 foot ceilings to 8 foot ceilings in the kitchen dining area (15x37ft area). We are going to raise the kitchen (15x24ft) to 10 feet and then there is the attached dining room which 10ft is not an option due to the roof structure. Would you:

A) have a drop to 8/9 feet to the dining are with some sort of arch transition

B) do tray ceilings on the entire area of kitchen/dining room (center dining room can be 10ft its the edges that the roof slopes down preventing it)

C) do both areas as vaulted ceilings starting from 8ft at the side of the 18ft ceilings and then going up to around 12ft. The grand room next to this kitchen area starts at 10ft at far end and ends at 18ft so it would be a similar set up but harder to do structurally

D) Leave kitchen and dining room at 8ft, but there will be a vaulted 18ft point transitioning directly into an 8ft flat ceiling.

Thanks!

Leave well enough alone. You’re costing yourself a fortune with your remuddling. The whole design concept of MCM uses compression and release scenarios. A work space like a kitchen needs to be the human 96” scale. Think restoration and not remuddling with totally unsuitable details. Original MVM features are highly desirable.

It is not a classic MCM, it has more elements of a ranch home than MCM. The MCM elements are the wall of windows and the vaulted 18ft beam ceilings. The rest is kind of out of place as original owners did additions and remodeling that is traditional so it definitely needs modification.

Tray ceilings are 20 years dated at this point. Vaulted ceilings do not sound at all right for the home you described or the plan you described which sounds a mess on Option C. Your choice (A) is the only option of those 3. Frankly, I’d leave it all alone. You are going to be spending a huge amount of money on this, for not a lot of return.

Post pictures. Post a layout. Post your goals for the changes. Post the suggestions of your architect. Post a realistic budget for changes.

Grand room has 18feet vaulted ceilings. There is a wall currently between kitchen and great room that I def want to eliminate. Given that you have soaring ceilings meeting an 8ft flat ceiling. These plans are from the architect. He suggests the 10ft to 8ft transition but I worried it could look weird in the nook area. Goal of changes is to get a more open floor plan. I do not care that much about ceiling height outside of my concern 18ft dropping to 8ft may look weird. Budget wise I am aware this will be very costly as it is a full gut remodel with multiple wall changes all new finishes etc

What does it look like now? Where’s the layout of that? I don’t think the proposed is very functional.

You aren’t getting any return in value from this enormous expense. It’s all a vanity expense, for your pleasure only. Like a new Maserati instead of a basic Camry. You’ll get almost no bump in appraisal to do what you are proposing. You need a different house. Or you need to accept this one for what it is, and not for what it isn’t.
