I did try to find something and this is all they had to say Shedding rug good luck with it.

I try returning it. Maybe a replacement would be more like your friend's and not shed excessively.

Sometimes this problem is caused by using a vacuum cleaner with a rotating beater brush on the head. If your vacuum has this, turn it off (as you would for a hard floor) or use a different vacuum.

What does Ballard Designs have to say about it? Under specifications on the website, it does say no beater brush. What do you use?

Tufted rugs are notorious for shedding. I've had 2. Never again!

We do turn off the beater brush when vacuuming. But - as I mentioned - even walking across it creates little piles of fluff. I can't return it - it's well past the return window. And several of the reviews said that it stopped shedding after a bit so I gave it a whirl. Oh well. Perhaps I will give Ballard a call and see if they have any suggestions.

According to the reviews, several others had the same problem with this rug. Unrelenting shedding, resulting in a threadbare rug. I would send it back, after complaining to Ballard.

I would turn over a corner and if the back is open look at how it is constructed. If the stitches are large bundles it was not tied tight enough. All new rugs will have loose fibers but that amount seems odd. When you talk to the company see if they can suggest a professional rug cleaning company and be willing to pay for the service. A professional rug cleaning company is not one of those services that come to your house but you would need to send it to them unless you happen to be lucky enough to have one in your area where you could drop it off.

I'm sorry I can't offer any helpful suggestions, but I found this to be the case whenever I purchased a wool rug in the past. I know they're supposed to be better quality, but because of the shedding which never really went away with my past rugs, I only buy synthetic rugs now. Maybe you'll be lucky like your friend and the shedding will reduce to tolerable levels soon.

It was ordered online - I didn't buy it at a brick and mortar store. I will give them a call, I guess, and see what, if anything, can be done for us.

I've had plenty of real wool rugs, no shedding. Right now I have a Karastan and a Couristan and neither of them have even shed.

Here's a hypothetical-

Most states have a 72 hour cooling off/contract cancellation/change your mind requirement for consumer contracts. Think of it as the return period. You buy a new car from a dealer. On Day 10 (72 hour period has passed), you learn the car you bought had been kept at a storage lot that had been flooded. The car is outwardly normal but an under the hood and underneath inspection shows evidence of having been in deepish water with possible engine component damage. The car's condition isn't what you expected and nothing was said about what you've since found out when you bought it.

Do you do nothing and take your lumps because the 72 hour period has passed? Or return it and demand your money back? I think most would choose the second alternative. Why would a shedding rug be any different after just a few months?

As a newlywed, we bought a Karastan wool area rug. That thing shed for decades. It finally was so stained from cat pee, we just threw it out...still shedding.

I've had several Karastans over the years and none of them shed. I've always used a shop vac in the house, maybe whatever a "beater brush" is makes a difference.

How is it constructed? AFAIK, rugs can be woven, 'hand tied', 'tufted', or with short fibers just 'heat set' into a 'gluey' synthetic backing. I'm guessing this is 'heat set' -- or rather, NOT set!

Call your CC company and file a complaint.

Was there a warranty with the rug?

I just looked at their website, which states products are guaranteed from defects for a year. I would argue that excessive shedding - to the point that the rug is losing its substance - is a defect.
