All done... but needs...something.

The rug is down, the furniture is in and the space is complete. Any thoughts on what else I need to add, other than some wall decor or artwork behind the sofa? It’s still feels a little bland. Am I just overthinking the space or is it still missing something?

Something on the wall. Art? Mirror?

Personally chosen artwork will do wonders to enliven your pretty room.

Thank you, yes. Definitely putting something behind the sofa. Would you put a bookcase or shelves between the two windows?

Love your rug. Would you mind sharing the information on it? The room is lovely, it just needs some art work for sure!

    Thank you, Heidesign!

The rug is from RugsUSA. Can’t beat the quality for the price on that site! This is the link to my rug, and they often have additional discounts as well. My walls are gray, and it ties the creams, whites, greys and blues together well.

Yay Roarah, Thank you for chiming in, I always love your opinion! I know exactly what you mean, it needs a little texture and warmth still. To your point, I will try the artwork first and if that still doesn’t do the trick I will definitely think about curtain panels. The shutters came with the house and I was hoping to get away with just those but I know what you mean.

I wonder if some sort of a ladder leaned against the wall behind the round basket weave end table with some throw blankets could add a little texture (and height). Spacing wise, it still would not interfere with artwork centered behind the sofa.

Bring rug toward fireplace 3 inches, pull chair forward about 1 foot, art over sofa and between windows, floor lamp next to chair.

I think it just needs art. I do love curtains, but I also like the clean look, and I think it looks clean without them. I would not do a ladder in there. It just brings clutter, and looks so busy.

I like your sprigs of greenery here and there. I also admire your editing skills.

You might need a lamp near the sofa/chair.

Do people come in the front door and have to walk between the sofa and the fireplace? Would it be better to pull the seating area toward the fireplace and have a path behind the sofa? But, maybe I don’t understand the house’s floor plan

Hi! Yes, art behind the sofa and a reading lamp or two. Also, I’m not sure what the door is beside the sofa, but I wonder if there’s enough room between the two windows to move the loveseat? The chair could go on the opposite side of the fireplace. That way you’d open the room a bit more to the rest of the house.

Door way next to the sofa is the entrance from the front door/foyer. Here are a few other perspectives.

To enter the space and cross over into the kitchen you would need to walk between the fireplace and coffee table. I could scootch the whole ensemble about 3 feet closer towards the fireplace, but then I’d just have a wall and the back of a sofa as walkway. There’s really no issue with the functionality as it is, so I’m not sure what that would solve for. But, I can pull it forward, take a photo and post for feedback.

Lamps, one standing for the corner chair and others around the room. It's beautiful.

Here it is with everything scotched forward about 3 feet. (Too hard for me to move the rug & rug pad but obviously that would come forward also). I’m not sure.. it kinda looks off to me.

Definitely get the art before you conclude that anything else is missing. It was the biggest lack in the room for me. But I also notice that you don't have any tables or floor lamps. They are both functional (overhead light is fine for some things but turning them off and using table and floor lamps can make the room cozier), and they can be attractive accent pieces as well.

I’d do some sort of faux roman shade or maybe even curtains on the windows with family photos of something in between. the wall behind the sofa I’d do a tryptich canvas artwork that doesn’t come out to far since it’s a fairly narrow walkway. But, I prefer the sofa against the wall myself because the space is too narrow behind.

You need some art, but please don't go to TJ Maxx and get some generic mass produced Chinese pieces because they have the same colors as your room. Also, don't just buy it to fill the walls. Take your time to find pieces you love and will love for years to come.

I have an oil painting I love that I got from an artist on ebay about 15 years ago. Other paintings came from artisan/flea markets in the area and during travels. One is a photocopy of a watercolor a great aunt painted 80 years ago (my mother had the original, but gave it back to that side of the family and made copies for our side). I do have 2 smaller framed prints that came from TJ Maxx, but they were purchased 18 years ago and the quality was much different from what is available today.

I would even prefer a whole collection of personal photos on your walls instead of generic mass produced art. You can even buy a yard of interesting fabric or wallpaper and have a piece framed. Have your kids paint something! You can frame album covers. So many options to make it personal, meaningful and unique.

Chipsa, yes great advise. I have a watercolor of tug boats that I fell in love with on my honeymoon. It’s small, so I’d need to either surround it to make more of a gallery around it or I could put it between the windows and find something complementary for behind the sofa. I love all things nautical and my home is in New England so I think I can get away with it. But nothing too kitschy obviously. Love the wallpaper idea too!

I agree, I don’t love the sofa pulled away from the wall. I moved it back - but it was worth trying.

Yes to lamps. Maybe a buffet lamp on sofa table and a floor lamp by the chair.

I think your room looks great, but one thing that's standing out to me is the size of the table behind your loveseat. It's beautiful, but it seems a bit too big for that spot. How would it look between your two windows? A lamp on it would look perfect in that space. I'm thinking a sofa table that isn't as wide as the loveseat would look better.

Pull chair out of corner and put floor lamp beside it. You need end tables and lamps also. Not liking table behind couch...too big for between Windows so do you have another room for it? Couch pulled forward will be uncomfortable for watching tv so I would move it back. Artwork will help but be sure you like li.

    LAMPS

Thanks ErinSean! Where else do you suggest end tables? I have one beside the chair and one between the loveseat and sofa. I also have the coffee table and if I keep it there, the sofa table. I’m open to adding more tables, just not sure where they would go.

Also will add a floor lamp in the corner, between the sofa and loveseat and another behind the club chair. (Note: we’ve never had lamps in either of our homes before so I’m not sure anyone would use them, but I’ll see how it goes - were more likely to dim the recessed lights and use battery candles for ambience)

Thoughts on artwork versus a shallow etagere between windows? In my old house I had built-ins on either side of my fireplace so I have collected nice pieces for display over the years - but this fireplace didn’t have room for built ins so we went with statement millwork instead.

Here are a few other angles of the sofa table. Worth adding that the door closest to the fireplace is a closet and the one next to that is the entrance from the garage, which is the main entrance for us. (Company comes in the front door).

I think your room looks really nice, and once the walls are "dressed" it will look complete. I also noticed the no lamps thing but wasn't sure if that was deliberate with the ceiling recessed lighting. If you are open to some lamps that would also cozy it up. Overall though it is a really nice room and yes to that rug. Editing to add- love the wall color as well. What is it?

How about adding some sparkle and warmth with an etagere between the windows? Something sculptural.

Of course some art on the walls will help to finish things off, but the most glaring omission are LAMPS!
The only kind of lighting you have is overhead and even if the cans are on a dimmer, there will still be a harshness and flatness to the room without some different types of lighting. Layered lighting makes a huge impact on the feel of a space and IMO is one of the most regularly overlooked items when people decorate their homes....almost like an afterthought. Lighting is THE key that takes an ordinary space to something really beautiful. Not that your decor is ordinary....I think you’ve done a great job so far.....but what’s lacking is additional lighting. I would have at least 4 lamps in your space.

ChloeMichelle, you’re speaking my language! I was thinking about something like that between the windows. The one you posted is fabulous. My kitchen has chrome hardware, I have an antique brass chandelier over the kitchen table so can I get away with gold/brass shelves?

Nidnay- Guilty. I have definitely overlooked the importance of lamps. I never had them in my first house either. I see how they could add a nice aesthetic to the space as well as ambient lighting. I’ll see what I can find and will post pictures once I do. That is clearly the main flaw to my space as noticed by the majority here.

Three things stand out to me

    1. The chair is shoved into the corner and needs to be moved forward into the room

    2. The windows are screaming for window treatments

    3. Lack of accent lighting

I would add some drapes, lamps. I would put the sofa console behind big sofa to the wall with some decor/wall art and lamps.

Celerygirl I have a much more narrow sofa table arriving today for behind the sofa. I have an HVAC return vent on the floor under the sofa along the wall that I don’t want to completely cover with the sofa, so this will allow some space against the wall, for better air circulation. It will also give me a surface for two buffet lamps like your inspiration picture. I got a large rectangular antique mirror to hang above that, on the sofa wall and I will put some artwork between the windows.

Thoughts on this floor lamp for over the chair?

Gorgeous space, well done! Lamps, art and fabric on windows and then it’s ready for a photo shoot!

Wow you work fast! I really like that lamp. Where is that from?

I think what's throwing me off with the sofa table is that the things on it are too tall. Like the candlesticks, for instance. I think those would look better on the fireplace mantel, or if you moved the sofa table to between the two windows, you have the tall wall behind them. Having the tall items behind the sofa feels a bit off to me.

You have a nice monochromatic look but I am itching to bring a little bit more color into the room. In addition to art work like everyone is pointing out, I would find one of the colors in the rug and have accents pillows in that color.

Chocolatebunny, I get that. In My old house I had those candlesticks on the ground next to the fireplace on by my hearth. I like the variety of height that they add but I get that they are a little too tall for tabletop height.

As for color, I think right now in its current state the space is very summer-y looking. For fall, I plan to warm it up with some burnt orange throw blankets and pillows. I have an antique mirror that’s getting hung today over the sofa and I will probably hang something season there too, like an autumn swag or wreath and of course some evergreen garland for the holidays.
