Any chance a day lily was nearby? The leaf reminds me of a day lily leaf. I’m no expert tho, wait for the pros to chime in tonight. Haha, they are out in their yards now! :-)

perhaps you injured it in its embryonic state... when you separated it????

or.. could you have dug up a spring bulb with it... did you bare root it? ... reminds me a bit of a hyacinth leave.... though its been months since i saw them.. and i dont know why it would be coming up now ...

whatever it is.. i suspect it wont be there in spring .. if it is.. then i would be really interested ...

There are day lilies nearby and I didn't bare root it when separated from mA . I'll see what happens in the spring it's just to see the leaves (one is small and pale ) coming directly from the crown of the mA reversion.

I thought it looked more like an Amaryllis leaf than a daylily leaf. Maybe one year it will bloom and show its true identity... A quicker way to find out is dig up the entire clump and follow the leaf to its roots (or bulb if it is something different) if you are so inclined.
